Windows 11 Tests Toggle to Force Apps to Open Maximized, Aiding Small Screens and Handhelds

Microsoft is testing a Windows 11 feature that allows users to set apps to open maximized by default. Most apps currently open in windowed mode unless the user changes this setting.

The new toggle, found in recent Windows 11 preview builds, is expected to help devices with small screens such as handheld gaming PCs and small tablets. X user phantomofearth was the first to spot the option. The toggle appears in the accessibility section of Windows Settings.

Windows 11's New Toggle for Opening Apps Maximized

The option appears in the accessibility section of Windows Settings as "Automatically open app windows maximized when they open." When enabled, all apps open maximized by default, removing the need to adjust each app individually.

Windows 11 previously forced apps to open maximized on small screens, but this behavior was removed. The new toggle allows users to enable maximized app windows on any screen size instead of relying on automatic detection.

The feature targets devices with small screens. PCs with displays under 13 inches benefit most, since apps are often easier to use maximized when windowed mode is less practical.

The benefit is greater on devices with screens of 10 inches or less, such as the Surface Go line and PC handheld gaming devices like the Xbox ROG Ally X, which has a 7-inch screen. Windows Central notes Windows is not well optimized for these small screen sizes, and opening apps full screen improves the experience.

The toggle can also help on PCs connected to a TV, where the screen is far from the user and windowed apps are less practical.

The toggle is only available in Windows 11 preview builds and has not reached the stable release. Windows Central sees it as part of a broader effort to make Windows 11 more customizable, following recent changes to the Start menu and context menus.

Microsoft has not said when the feature will reach the stable channel, and it may change before general availability.

Force ALL new explorer windows to open maximized?

Is there a reg mod to Force ALL new explorer windows to open maximized?

I know how to change the properties to open the shortcut maximized...but I'm wanting ALL windows to open maximized. For example when right clicking on a folder in explorer and selecting "Open in new window" I would rather that new explorer window be full screen rather than a small window that I ALWAYS have to adjust.

I'm so tired of windows 10 opening supper small windows...

  3. Windows Forces Program To Open In A Small Window

When I open a specific program (Protools, an audio editing program) something forces the program into a smaller window when it should be full screen:

You can see the top right of the program window shows the small window option, as if the computer currently thinks it is maximized and is giving you the option to minimize it. To make the program full screen I have to click that once and the computer will now think the window is small (even though it already was) and then I have to click it again to make it full screen.

    -------------------

Now I did find a work around for this by right clicking the program and going to properties -> compatibility -> change high DPI settings -> override high DPI scaling behavior performed by application. That will make the program open in full screen.

The only problem is when I do that then it messes up plugins within the program. When I open a plugin within Protools the plugin window will be too small and will block off access to parts of the plugin:

Ideally it should look like this:

What I need is a way to have both things at once, the program to open in full screen and the plugins to be sized correctly. I messed around a lot with the compatibility settings for protools and the plugin but couldn't find a combination that would make this work. I think it would be easier to find the source of why the computer is forcing protools to open in a small window and fix that, rather than trying to layer on compatibility solutions to cover it up.

Thank you so much for any help you can provide. This stuff is so frustrating and that fact that there are people nice enough online to just try and help others with it is really amazing.

Open a PDF viewer in windowed mode (NOT maximized, NOT minimized)

I am trying to force a PDF viewer (Bluebeam Revu) to always open in windowed mode, not full screen (maximized) and not minimized. Even for normal programs I see no way to do this, but for a PDF viewer where I open it 100% of the time by clicking on all
these different individual PDFs, I really am not sure how I would go about forcing it to always open in windowed mode.

To further complicate the issue, if I make a shortcut to a pdf (for testing purpose only, only "Shortcuts" have the following options) and set it to always open minimized or maximized, nothing changes; it will always only open the same way that it had been
closed (windowed or maximized) and none of the options changes that.

If you have any suggestions that would be great, because right now half the time I need to window mode the PDF, close it and re open it so that it starts windowed (I do use full screen most of the time, but there is a bug that can't allow it to _start_ full
    screen, hence the problem).

    Thanks!
