Windows 11 Updates Wiping Out Restore Points - A Call for Better QA and User Control

Dear Windows Community,I'm reaching out to express my extreme frustration with Windows 11's update system. It seems there's a lack of quality assurance in the way updates are pushed onto users. Every time an update occurs, it's like opening Pandora's box – I never know what problem I'll have to fix next.I've always been cautious, diligently creating restore points before every update and occasionally in between. Imagine my shock when I needed to revert to one of these points, only to find them all mysteriously gone, except for a solitary one linked to an uninstalled app. This is unacceptable.

    :)

RESTORE POINTS WIPED OUT BY UPDATE.

Its true that major Windows 10 version upgrades (like from Anniversary Update to Creators Update) will indeed wipe all previous restore points. But that's OK... as those special upgrades have their own similar technique to restore to the previous version.

However, if you're having problem with ordinary updates wiping restore points, then I'd be looking to see how much storage space you've allocated to the System Restore feature. If you don't have enough room... then the next restore point will wipe existing
ones in an attempt to make more room.

    auto restore point

    Hi Bryan,

System Restore automatically creates a restore point before the following events:

    • Application installation (provided the application utilizes an installer that is System Restore compliant). If the application install causes system problems, the user can restore the system to a state before the installation of the application.
    • AutoUpdate installation. AutoUpdate provides an easy way for users to download critical Windows updates. After the update is downloaded, the user can install the update on the system. If the user chooses to install the update, System Restore creates a restore
point before the installation of the update begins.
    • System restore. For example, if a user accidentally chooses the wrong restore point, the user can undo the restore operation by choosing a restore point before the system restore took place. The user can then choose the correct restore point.

    Hope the information helps.
