  1. Windows 11 upgrade on a new machine with a 12 year old product key

I have a 12 year old laptop, originally Windows7, later upgraded to Windows10 for free.I cloned the system a few days ago to a new machine that would also be suitable for running Windows11. Currently, Windows10 runs flawlessly on the new computer. Is the original product key suitable for upgrading to Windows11? The "check for updates" button in the settingswindow does not offer Windows11. On the old laptop - although it is not suitable for running Windows 11 - the prompt to install Windows11 appeared several times. How can I upgrade the new machine to Windows11?

    :)

Cannot upgrade to Windows 10 - Unique Product Key situation

    No... let me try again.

    • Old computer is running Win7 Pro (SP1) with a Product key I have from a few years ago. The Product is activated already, but I do NOT use this computer at this point, so I didn't worry about using the Product key when moving to the new computer (see below).
    • New computer is running Win10 Pro, with data and OS migrated from the Old computer, (same Product key as above), then Upgraded to Win10 (without getting a new Product Key).
What I am trying to do now...

    • I want to upgrade the OLD computer (Win7 Pro) to Windows 10... using a new Product Key I just purchased.
    • I have tried to do this internally, and also using the ISO burned to a thumb drive. But it does not want to work.
    • Steps:
      • Start from USB drive.
      • Enter New Product Key (or click "I don't have one").
      • Install initiates and then tells me to restart from Windows and then open the installer again to continue.
        • At this point, I actually need to Quit the installation to restart the machine.
      • When restarted, I go to the USB drive and restart/resume the installation process.
      • I have tried to download and not to download updates, but when the installation fails, I see the message, "Something happened" and "Setup has failed to validate the product key".
      • NOTE This happens if I enter the NEW Windows 10 Product Key, or if I skip that step (which I assume means that it will use the old Windows 7 Key for the upgrade).

  3. Deactivating a Windows 10 Pro Key from an Old Machine to Reactivate in a New Machine

I built a brand new computer to replace the my current computer, which was also built by me. My goal is to transfer the Windows OS product key from my old machine to the new one. I originally bought the key through the Microsoft Store, and the key is attached to my Microsoft account along with both machines. I also have the key in an email receipt. I did refer to the Activation Article, but the step I'm missing is the "Freeing" of the key from the old hardware, so it can be activated on the new one. Both machines are up and running.

    • My key is for Windows 10 Home, and recently I upgraded to Pro. Can I still use the same activation key?
    • If I "Reset this PC" and effectively perform a clean wipe, will that free up the key?
I'm okay with any "Nuclear" options for the old machine, so long as I can move the key and not buy Windows again.
Thanks for your help. I realize I might be missing something obvious considering how common this inquiry is.
