Windows 11 will not activate after CPU change

Hey Everyone,I own a legitimate Windows license, been using it for years without issue. I recently upgraded my PC's CPU from and AMD 7700X to and AMD 7800X3D and now I have the "Activate Windows" watermark in the lower right hand corner. When I try to re-activate windows using the troubleshoot wizard and selecting a recent hardware change, it just says "Unable to activate Windows" try again later.I've tried submitting requests for a Microsoft support technician to call me but have not received any calls. How can I get my Windows re-activated?

    :)

  2. Can I still upgrade to Windows 11 if I change the storage drive, CPU, and motherboard?

My PC does not meet the minimum requirements to upgrade to Windows 11 (Pro). In order to accommodate this upgrade I've bought a new storage drive, CPU, and motherboard. The new drive is much faster than the other drives, so I'd like to use it to store Windows instead of the original drive.

    • Is it possible to immediately activate Windows 11 after I install it on the new drive using an installation disk?
    • In case activation isn't possible because I don't own Windows 11 yet, would it work if I installed Windows 10 first and then upgraded to Windows 11 instead?
    • Or would it not activate either copy of Windows 10 or 11 because my PC isn't recognized as the original due to the changed parts?
I would very much appreciate any help or suggestions.

  3. CPU Change With Activated TPM in Windows 11

    Dear Microsoft Community,

    Situation:

    • I recently replaced my old CPU (Ryzen 5 2600) with a Ryzen 5 5600, see system information below
    • Failed to consider that TPM was activated; I did not use TPM for BitLocker/drive encryption
The first boot up showed the following message:

Windows 11 will not activate after CPU change 90d50530-7646-4f26-9dc1-a3625f2b6f95?upload=true.jpg

Initially, I pressed N, which resulted in a re-boot that left me with the same message. Then, I followed the recommendation stated in several online forums and pressed Y (important to note: Z on a German keyboard). This was succeded by a seemingly normal system boot into Windows 11 - all files are (afaik) accessible.

    Problem:

Checking the system security reveals that the status for "Nachweis" (~ verification) is "Nicht unterstützt" (not supported), see image below.

Windows 11 will not activate after CPU change 41d10c7b-78fa-468a-b411-87247f4a27a6?upload=true.png

Updating the drivers via device manager did not solve the issue.

    Questions:

    • How do I get TPM to correctly work again? I have not yet tried to remove TPM.
    • Can I safely sell / pass on my old CPU even though it was removed with an active TPM?
    System information:

    • Previous CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
    • Current CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600
    • Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus Pro B450 (F63d)
    • OS: Windows 11 Education, Version 22H2, Build 22621.819
Thank you all for your support - I am happy to provide more information if needed!

  4. Windows 11 will not activate after CPU change

    Windows activation error

    Hi Brandon,

Before replacing the Mother Board if Windows 10 was activated, then you can refer the steps/link below for activating Windows 10.

The only hardware changes that can negatively impact activation status once you upgrade to free version are the changes to the:

    • CPU
    • TPM
    • Motherboard replacement
The following changes are examples of hardware changes that will NOT impact the activation status:

    • HDD/SSD
    • Video card
    • Adding extra memory
If you replace the CPU, TPM, or Motherboard you may have to re-activate but this will not require a purchase of Windows 10.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.
