Windows 10: Windows 2004 updates

System: I7- 8700k Asus Z390-A Prime motherboard Asus Strix 8gb 1080 Graphics Card 32gb 3200mhz Trident Z Rgb Ram HP - 500gb Nvme M.2 Ssd AORUS 369 Liquid Cooler

So after updating to 2004 windows update everything worked fine. Last week my computer asked to be restarted because of a pending update. Upon reboot it would let me log in but would restart due to error (I don't recall the error at that time).

After a few restarts with the same issue I tried advanced setting and recovering from restore point. Said it was successful but same issue after restart. After that restart I keep getting "critical process died"

Now i work on computers myself on the side.. Mostly hardware and some software. Built all my pc's and never had issues or at least ones I couldn't solve.

I tried: Uninstalling updates (both options) - failed with error

Running command prompt and trying several options that seemed to work for other to no avail.

Using media creation tool to create usb with latest updates and tried to repair drive - fail

Booting into safe mode worked twice but stopped working after that.

Called Microsoft technical support for help and was told in broken English to do a factory rest of the system.

This is the second time this week this happened after update to drivers. I already did a fresh install and it failed with the same error.

Anyone have any solutions for "critical process died" to allow me to at least boot into safe mode?

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.
