Windows 10: Windows 20H2 completely freezes when idle

Started happening about a month ago. It doesn’t happen always but when it does the only solution is a hard shutdown (long power button press).

Some observations:

• Only happens when idle or with a light load. (Browsing, MS Office, etc.)
• Never happens with heavy load (Gaming usually)
• Screen, keyboard shortcuts, mouse all become completely unresponsive.
• Not happened in safe mode. (Might require more testing time though)
• No bad sectors were found. No unusual fan activity or high temperatures.
• Plugged in/ on battery doesn’t seem to affect the issue

According to Event Viewer, it started happening on Feb 13th. I checked for any Windows updates or programs installed just before the date but couldn’t find any. The only one was an AMD driver installation on Feb 11th (my prime suspect). Since then, I have updated AMD driver twice. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Windows 10 freezes/deadlocks after being left idle for a few minutes

I have done all of what you suggested, and it still freezes when idle for a few minutes. I have just performed a 1 hour + download. Five minutes later, while the computer was idle, Windows 10 froze.

 

AMD Graphics Driver freezes after 20H2 feature update, need help!

Dear Support forum,

Yesterday I installed the feature update 20H2.

After logging back-on a pop-up showed that the AMD graphic driver was not installed, which it was before the update.

However whenever I try to install any AMD graphic driver, the screen freezes completely.

When I restart by hard reset, the screen freezes already during the loading process (for example the circling dots before log-in screen).

The only way I can still log-in is by starting in Safe Mode, and/or by disabling the graphic driver completely as otherwise Windows is trying to install any update.

I have tried restoring my system via System Restore, didnt help. Tried to roll back the feature update, but unable to, Windows is asking me to completely reset.

I have tried installing a new driver via AMD website, Driver Booster, Windows Update, Device Manager.. nothing worked, everytime during the installing process the screen will freeze completely.
