Windows 10: Windows 7 and 8 users are now able to reserve their free copy of W10

Discus and support Windows 7 and 8 users are now able to reserve their free copy of W10 in Windows 10 News to solve the problem; Local account or Live ID logon? I use a local account on both W8.1 and W7, but I use Hotmail and am logged into that most of the time. Discussion in 'Windows 10 News' started by labeeman, May 31, 2015.

  2. Just noticed the option to check your PC, it says my graphics card isn't compatible and I will have problems with the display even though I can install win 10

hopefully this is just a driver that will come out in time for the release

  3. Local account may be why you got asked for an e-mail address. Just a guess at this point. You did the reservation via the taskbar icon right? Just want to confirm.

No. When I clicked on the windows icon on the task bar in W7 and checked it said everything was ready and I didn't need to do anything else. It was only on the W8.1 install that it asked me to reserve a copy.

This is from my W7 install.

I wonder if the Tin Foil Hats that uninstalled/blocked the DiagTracking(KB 3022345) update are this.

People are getting false positives when running SFC/DISM and get that "telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json" & "utc.app.json" can't be repaired, so they uninstall or re-image and hide the update. I've had to explain to a few not to worry about those false positives, but they just go ahead and uninstalled*Banghead.

Have not got my notification yet...but I do have auto updates switched off as I prefer to do them manually.

Just downloaded and installed a few updates so hopefully when my machine restarts it will be there.

  9. I did not see any icon in the taskbar but when I checked updates I was asked if I wanted to reserve a copy. It is now reserved. Windows 7 and 8 users are now able to reserve their free copy of W10 :)

The only concern I have is that I just did a clean install of Window 8.1 PRO and Office 2013 because of a couple of programs that did not work properly with Windows 10 and Office 2016. I did send in bug reports so I hope the release version will make me happy.

  14. Hmmmm! I'm not sure I really want to give up my Windows 8.1 for Windows 10, so before I install 10, I'll clone my main HD to another similar drive, so I preserve my 8.1, just in case I don't really like Windows 10.

I'll have basically a Dual Boot system, with 8.1 on one HD and Win-10 on another.

    Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

  15. I followed the steps in the 2nd post here and it enabled the notification:

I want to reserve my free copy of Windows 10, but I dont see - Microsoft Community

    • Open Notepad
    • Copy the following text and paste it into Notepad:
    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Appraiser" /v UtcOnetimeSend /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    schtasks /run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"
    :CompatCheckRunning
    schtasks /query /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser" | findstr Ready >nul
    if NOT "%errorlevel%" == "0" ping localhost >nul &goto :CompatCheckRunning
    schtasks /run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Setup\gwx\refreshgwxconfig"

    • Click File, and then Save As
    • In the File name box, change the file name to ReserveWin10.cmd
    • Then click the dropdown next to Save as type, and select All files (*.*)
    • Select the folder you would like to save the file to. For this example, let’s choose to save the file to the C:/Temp folder. Then click Save.
    • Open an elevated command prompt. (From the Start screen or Start menu, type Command Prompt in the search box, and then in the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.)
    • Finally, run the file from the location you saved to in Step 6. In this example, you would type the following in the Command Prompt window and hit Enter:
      Run C:/Temp/ReserveWin10.cmd
