Windows 10: Windows 7 Product Key transferrable to a new PC?

My dad upgraded to a new tower pc and he gave me the old one. Its a Dell Optiplex that came with a copy of Windows 7 on the old mechanical HD. I want to prolong the life of this old PC so I swapped out the old mechanical HD for a new SSD, but I also want to transfer the validated copy of the OS to the new SSD. The tower PC has a Windows product key on the side panel. Am I able to use this product key to validate Windows 10 or 11? If not, how do I go by upgrading the old OS to something newer?

Seller could use product key received illegally - there are a lot of such keys on Amazon, eBay and so on.

The key you've found is for Windows 7 preinstalled on PC by hardware manufacturer. Unfortunately such license is not transferrable and should be used only at same PC.

 

Product key association disable on old pc

I sold my old pc to a friend. He installed some missing parts (HDD, GPU and RAM). Then we installed Windows 10 Home 64-bit version from USB stick. I was surprised to see that windows was automatically activated after that. I did some digging and found out that it is using my product key, which i use now in my own new pc. My friend does not have his own product key, the idea was that he just uses the unactivated windows with limited features.


I uninstalled my Windows 10 product key via command prompt in friends computer (as i understand this is only local solution, if he reinstall windows or clicks the active button, it reactivates automatically with my product key) and now it says windows is not activated, but my product key is still shown with Produkey app in his pc. So far windows is still activated my own pc.


My questions:

1. Is this all i need to do?
2. How do i get rid of product key showing still with product key showing apps on my friend's computer?
3. Is there a way to get rid of association of my product key on that old pc that i sold to friend?

EDIT: I originally installed windows 10 via upgrade option from Windows 7, if that matters.

 

How to activate Windows 10 with Windows 7 Product Key.

A Product Key is a unique identification for PC. Each Windows versions of Windows has a different Product key. Hence, if you try to install Windows 10 with Windows 7 Product key then you will not to be able to activate Windows 10 operating
system.

To Install Windows 10 using Windows 7 Product key, please follow the below steps:

Step 1: Install the Windows 7 with the same Product key which have you.

Note: The Boot Camp will allow the installation for Windows 7.

Step 2: if there is any problem with activation he can do a phone activation.

Step 3: Once the Windows 7 is activated, check for the Windows 10 upgrade. Once it is available then we would request you to upgrade it.
