    Will 64-bit Windows 7 Professional SP1 upgrade to 64-bit Windows 10 Professional?

@ Jim Wynne: thank-you for your reply.

Is the version of Windows Defender 10 that is installed on 64-bit hardware also a 64-bit application? (As far as I know, Windows Firewall 7 is a 64-bit application, so that is of no concern.)

Windows Defender was installed (on my computer) by the Windows 7 Professional installer as a 32-bit application. MS advised that I should not run it. Reportedly, it could not detect or respond to 64-bit malware, and whether it could protect against 32-bit
malware on 64-bit hardware seemed to be in dispute. As far as I know, a 64-bit Windows Defender was never developed. The first 64-bit malware executable was discovered (not on my computer) about 6 months after I began running Windows 7, while MSE was still
    in beta.

Be that as it was, other technical pundits claimed that we also needed to run a typical 32-bit "anti-virus" program (such as Bit Defender) to guard against 32-bit malware. Evidently, such malware could and would be run in "compatibility mode" just like
any other 32-bit executable. Yet others claimed that Windows 7 has a native 32-bit anti-malware component, and that third-party 32-bit anti-malware was not needed. That component can be identified as one that is loaded as a service, by using Process Explorer,
but it doesn't use "signatures" and doesn't scan files on storage media.
