This used to work in my last install of Win7 but this one doesn't cooperate. Must be some option I did before. I want to hit M and it goes to the first shortcut titled with an M. It makes things so fast.

How to create shortcuts for start menu?

    1. First of all right-click on the file which you want to pin to Start Screen and select "Create shortcut" option to create a shortcut of the file.

    2. Now copy and paste following text in RUN dialog box and press Enter:

    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\

It'll open the classic "Start Menu" folder which is still used to store Start Screen shortcuts similar to previous Windows versions.

    3. Now cut the file shortcut which you created in step 1 and paste it in "Start Menu" folder which you opened in step 2.

    4. Now go to Start Screen and press "Ctrl+Tab" keys together to show "All Apps" page.

    Pin_New_Items_Windows_8_Start_Screen.png

    5. Here you'll see the file shortcut which you created earlier. Right-click on the file shortcut and click on "Pin to Start" option.

That's it. It'll immediately pin the file shortcut to Start Screen.

NOTE: If the shortcut doesn't appear in "All Apps" screen, try to move the shortcut from "Start Menu" folder to "Start Menu\Programs" folder.

[Windows 10 1511] Problem with Menu Start shortcuts

I believe this is because the sort order is determined by the first letter of the file to which the shortcut points. So in your case the file is winamp.exe

When you changed the entry the shortcut no longer pointed to a valid filename and so Windows used the first letter of the shortcut name to position it in the list.

In Windows 10 there are all sorts of ways of starting programs and apps. So, if after clicking the start menu, you just type the first letter of the app you want, you will immediately get a list of all the apps starting with that letter. You may find this is quicker and easier to do.

Windows 7 Start Menu: How to press the first letter of the shortcut and it highlights it?

How to pin shortcut to start menu.

This sounds great... only problem is that the hidden folder in Windows 10 "C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" contains five folders and no files. If I add my shortcut to the "Programs" folder as suggested, it does NOT appear
in the "All apps" list. If I put it in the "Windows System" folder, a subfolder of "Programs" which contains 7 other shortcuts that show up in "All apps", my shortcut still does not appear. I really don't care about "The common way" or "the more elegant way",
I just want to know how to accomplish this, and so far, these solutions just don't work. It seems like there should be a folder, somewhere, where all the shortcuts for the "All apps" list are stored. I hope someone can help me with this frustrating issue.
