    Windows 8.1 product key won't work during re-installation


    I have a 2013 Dell XPS 14 that runs Windows 7. In 2014, I bought Windows 8.1 from Microsoft Store for upgrade. Recently, I did a PC reset due to slow boot up. Now, I cannot reinstall Windows 8.1 with the given product key. Error message "This key won't work with this edition of Windows. Try a different key"

    I don't think that tool asks for a key if you are running the version of Windows you are trying to download the ISO for.

    A friend of mine has an all-in-one that came with Windows 8 pre-installed. He erased the original OS thinking he could install another version of Windows 8. One thing he encountered, that he didn't expect, the BIOS/UEFI has a password. So, basically he is locked out from installing another OS. His BIOS has the product key nestled inside. Is it possible to find out which version the product key belong to?
