Windows 10: Windows 8.1 to Win 10, Media creation tool does not restart system

Bit of background: Was getting 8024601 errors when attempting to upgrade with the Windows Update method. It would start installing, get to 85% before stopping for a while. Then it would finally reset, only to boot up win 8.1 and Windows update would have the above error code for the attempt.

So I decided to try the Media Creation Tool instead. I select the option to upgrade this PC, it downloads fine, and everything goes okay until it wants to reboot my machine. Tried it twice, first time it sat there waiting to restart. It never did, no programs exited, didn't log off or anything. Second time it gets to the same stage, but locked up my computer instead.

Do you have any windows operating system media? Win 7.Win 8 or 8.1?

If you do install on the new disk and then get the Media Creation Tool and upgrade.

You can do this since your computer is probably fully activated if you had upgrade to windows 10.

I downloaded win 10 iso by media creation tool on win 8.1 pro 64 bit pc.

 

Just tried a third time. When I came back, I had a dialog box telling me the install failed. This is with Antivirus uninstalled, and all peripherals disconnected.

This is the setuperr.log:

 

Try this:

1) Access this file location C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete everything there. (Note delete only content found there and not the Download folder itself)

2) Open CMD (command prompt) with run as administrator (admin privileges) and run this command: wuauclt.exe /updatenow

Hopefully Ztruker's suggestion will get you past the blockage.

Something to consider if not- it sounds like whatever problem stopped you from doing the first attempt to upgrade is also messing up the attempts with the ISO. I've seen posts elsewhere that indicate if there are disk scan problems the upgrade and/or ISO approaches will error out. Haven't had that happen myself so not sure how the error is depicted in those cases.

 

exactly what I tried two days ago - zero, crashed. Am currently downloading with media tool, and its sooooooooooooooo slow. 19% in about 2 hours

 

Attempted this, The update fails with error code 80246010.

Attempted all of these, unfortunately nothing has worked.

I now seem to have developed a situation where the \SoftwareDistribution\Downloads folder is empty, but Windows update still wants to restart and apply an update. Doing so only restarts my computer, and doesn't even show an update being attempted in the update history.





My brother has suggested refreshing Windows 8.1 and updating everything all over again before trying to upgrade, should I attempt it?

 

That should work unless your problems are caused by hardware.

 

It appears that refreshing Windows 8.1 is also failing to complete, and reverts back to how it was before the attempt.

Something I noted, is that with both the attempted upgrades to Win 10, and the Refresh of Win 8.1, Is these same errors:

I/O device error, makes me think there may be a problem with my HDD.

Checking the drive for errors while Windows is running finds no faults. Chkdsk however, gets stuck at 11%.

 

where this file 'setuperr.log' is located?

 

Guys if this helps i had same errors until i got a E-mail from MS telling me my update was on the way or i could upgrade now with the media tool, did you get your e-mail yet ? might be why but not sure.
