  2. Windows Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 issues/problems

The issue has not been resolved until we are certain that the offending package will not continually to try to install itself and that correct installation does not break features/functionality of Windows 8.1

The package as reported in the Application log " Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 x64 Minimum Runtime - 11.0.61030. Product Version: 11.0.61030. Product Language: 1033"

The package as reported by Windows Update history "Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package (KB3119142)"

As of right now the update does not show as available on my Windows 8.1 machine but it shows it as successfully installed on 1/9/2016. All the other attempts to install the update (some failed) have been removed from the Update History. However, the System
and Application logs both show that there were several other attempts to install the package have occurred since 1/9/2016.

    The phone comes with 8.1

You can pin a web page to start on an 8.1 phone, a Windows 10 phone and a windows 10 pc.

On the phone in IE, three dot menu at the bottom, pin to start.

On a Windows 10 PC in edge browser, three dot menu at the top right, pin this page to start

As you see , the Windows 10 PC does not lack this ability. Don't know where or how you determined you could not do this

Windows 8.1 Update 1 to Lack a Start Menu, Windows 9 to Have It for Sure – Report

I run Classic Shell on Windows 8.1 and it works just fine, so the addition of a Start Menu isn't a big deal for me.

Well, Windows 9 looks promising then. I just hope that MS won't break something else.

. . .please MS do not return what is noting more than something that is not needed.

  7. It wont make any difference to me whether they bring the Start button back in 9 or not as I've not actually missed it.

The old start menu isn't something I'd use or miss, but I'm fine with them bringing it back as long as I can turn it off if I want. Metro apps being able to run windowed and resizable is something I look forward to though.

I've been up and down on my opinions of W8 and the whole Metro/Modern thing, but I do like the traditional Start Menu more than the start screen. I'm a lot more comfortable on W7, but can deal with W8 if I really need to.

  11. Well, guess I'm in the minority here but I like and use the Start Button/Menu alot. Its convenient , compact, and in alphabetical order. (something that appeals to my borderline OCD *Wink)

I agree with you about the start menu, which is why I use classic shell on my 8.1 installation.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 to Lack a Start Menu, Windows 9 to Have It for Sure – Report

For me, the lack of start menu is more than a nuisance. I can't just pin my software to the taskbar. I have 50+ software installed. I use about 20-25 of them regularly. Some would say to use toolbars but I don't like how they look. They were fine in Vista and older but starting from Windows 7, it starts to clash with the OS design quite a bit. I also LOVE being to pin to the Start Menu. That's actually quite handy. If I need a seldomly used software, just press the button and start typing its name or look through the neatly organized drawer that is the Start Menu. I'm also one that doen't really like using Windows' keyboard shortcuts; CTRL+C, CTRL+V, CTRL+Z, CTRL+SHIFT+N are the only shortcuts I find myself using often. So, bottom line, I find myself hooked the start menu in more ways than one too: most of the time, I also use it to get the Control Panel, PC properties and "Manage" (Computer).

And I also agree with indianacarnie. *Wink
