Windows 10: Windows 8.1 upgraded to 10, trying to transfer to new Build

New PC build, trying to transfer old PC product code.The old PC, I have deactivate the product code.I had Windows 8.1 with the free upgraded to 10.Installed Windows 10 on new PC and product code is not working.Suspect code is only for 8.1How do I format the hard drive M.2 so I can install Windows 8.1?From my understanding we cannot do this from BIOS.What are my options?How do I remove Windows 10 and install Windows 8.1?

If you upgraded from a retail box copy Windows 7, it has retail transfer rights.

How to transfer windows 8/10 to new hard drive

I have a windows 8 installation disk with licence, I used it to build a computer.

I have since used the free upgrade to windows 10 on this computer.

I just purchased a new SSD drive that I want to install in this computer.

I am looking for step by step instructions on the best way to install or transfer windows 10 to this new drive.

Do I install the windows 8 and then upgrade to windows 10? Will I have to pay to do that? Do I need to do anything before the install? Take down the key or licence number somewhere? Where do I find that?

Any help or suggestions would be of great assistance.

It depends on how Windows 10 was originally configured on your computer.

If its a full retail store bought license online or offline, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

If its the free upgrade from a retail store bought Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

If its the free upgrade from a OEM preinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is NOT transferable to a new computer or motherboard.
