Windows 10: Windows 8 to 10 won't activate. Do I just hack it?

I received a Dell Inspiron 2350 from a customer who upgraded for the holidays, so I decided to repurpose it. After clean installing Windows 8, which activated itself, I went to upgrade it to 10 using the portable tool. Following this, Windows reports that I don't have a valid serial. The troubleshooter tells me to buy a serial from the Microsoft Store, and command prompt reports the computer is in "notification mode". How do I correct this?Is this some kind of new thing? I've been upgrading Windows 7 and 8 to 10 for many years now, using OEM serials, and this is the second time I've encountere

I'll revert back to windows 7 then.

When I still was on windows 7, about a year ago I added 4GB extra ram which is a total of 8GB now,
is that causing the problem?

or you could hack it with a crack but please note this is always risky and you don't know what's in the hack
