Windows 10: Windows 8 to windows 10

I have a pc that originally had windows 8 it was then upgraded to 8.1. I then went to microsoft website and downloaded windows 10 which is what I'm using now. I put in my old product key bit it rejected it so obviously it was ok for windows 8 and 8.1 but not windows 10. So I'm running windows 10 but need a product key to activate it. How do I go about this please?
