Windows 10 external monitor with lid closed but only when connected

I think I found an easy work around that allows a user to quickly switch between setting that (1) If connected to external monitor, do not sleep computer when lid is closed, and (2) If not connected to external monitor, "sleep" when lid is closed.

This method will not automatically detect when the laptop is connected to an external display, but its better then always going deep into setting and changing what to do when the lid is closed.

Step 1: Create a Custom Power Plan

    1. Settings ->system display, notification, and power ->power & sleep ->additional power settings -> create a power plan (on left side of page)

    2. Leave the power plan set to "Balanced"

    3. Name the powerplan whatever you want.

    4. Click next

    5. Click create

    6. Now back to the page titled "choose or customize a power plan" make sure the new plan is selected, then click "change plan settings"

    7. click "change advanced power settings"

    8. A new window titled "power options" will open, it should display your newly created power plan in the first drop down window.

    9. Click the + next to "Power buttons and lid"

    10. Click "lid close action"

    11. Click on both of the sleeps and a drop down will appear, click"do nothing"

    12. Click apply then OK.

Now, your newly created power plan will not sleep the laptop when the lid is closed.

Tip: Do not change lid setting from the "Choose or customize power plan" screen, because doing so in that area will affect all power plans.

Step 2: Create a quick way to switch between power plans

This step allows you to quickly switch power plans. The built in method did not work for me becuase my custom power plan would not show up in the drop down menu. You can try it though.

Method 1 that did not work for me: Go to "Windows mobility Center" by either searching for it or by right clicking the battery icon and clicking on "Windows Mobility Center." The third box from the left will have a drop down menu where you can switch between
the default power setting and the newly customized one.

Method 2 that is working for me: Go to the microsoft store and download for free "PowerPlanSwitcher." After it is installed, you need to either pin in to the task bar for one click action, or to the tray. Once in the tray, you can click it and switch between
power plans. Now, if you can remember to switch plans back to the windows default power plan your computer will sleep when the lid is closed.

    Hope this helps.

Windows 10 olp vs retail vs oei/oem

Retail - what you buy from a store

OEM - pre-installed by a manufacturer; same Windows as retail but Microsoft provides no support and it cannot be (legally) upgraded or moved to another computer.

    OEI- same as OEM

OLP - volume license: What is the difference between Microsoft OLP license and OEM License?

All the above found in minutes with a web search. It's the best way to get the information you need.

Duh! If sales are slow in April then maybe Win 9 is what they need to boast sales. During Christmas people will buy what ever is available.

If Windows 9 isn't ready for prime time it isn't ready. You don't want to release it and then sort out the bugs and flaws. Microsoft doesn't need any more negative press. If they bring it to market too early and it has issues, its just going to backfire on them.

  9. OEM's are probably worried Windows 8.1 will cause a lacklustre Christmas and New Year Holiday shopping season. In the past if you have bought a a machine within 3 months or so of the release of the new OS you got a free update aside from disc fees. It just makes more work for everyone in April as clients upgrade and screw up their machines. It would be better for everyone if the new OS is ready. But it most likely won't be and that is better than rushing a not ready product to market. We have seen what happens in that case. I suppose the best thing would be a one time exception to move Christmas to the 25th April. *Roflmao2
Microsoft have really screwed their customers and the OEM's with this Windows 8 debacle. The only other suggestion is a special version that upgrades for free in increments giving less chance or maybe more chance of breaking things. It is going to be interesting in the support industry for a while next year.

I'm certain that there is a drop dead date for the release of Win9. Every IT shop has one and they have to stick to it. My personal experience in the field has taught me this all too well. When a new project or major update goes online there normally is a rather large list is "fixes" that need to be done right away. And the same will occur with Win9.

Just the nature of the best.

I, for one, hope that if the release date is in April that MS will offer free updates to people who get PC's over Christmas.
It would be only fair, IMO.

    But ya never know.

Please don't get me wrong Bunny I just don't get why it wouldn't be fair. If someone decided to buy a computer for Christmas (four four to five months before the release of the next Windows OS what gives them the right to get a free copy of the next OS. They made the decision to buy early thus they should live with that decision. Again why is it people think that Microsoft owes people something just because they buy a product that contains a Microsoft OS.

I'd like two second what Lee said.

Microsoft does not "owe" anybody. We chose to buy Windows 8, heck some of us chose to buy Vista!!

Nobody was forced to buy Windows 8!

I also hope that Microsoft waits 'till April to release Windows 9. I don't want any bugs in my brand new OS!

I would think that a computer MFG would supply the free upgrade and not MS.
Why?? To get more sales around the holiday. I would more likely buy a PC during the
holiday if I knew that I would get an upgrade to Win9 when it does come out.

    Just my 2c.
