Windows 10: Windows activation after hardware swap

Switched out my motherboard. Windows claims that it isn't activated anymore.

My windows key is tied to my account, which happens to be the only account on the system.


Troubleshoot activation says I'm not connected to the internet. Turned off firewall to no success, then used Google's DNS for my network adapter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to no prevail. Cloudflare DNS didn't work either 1.1.1.1 so I'm assuming that isn't the issue.




Windows help/contact support didn't work either, no one responded after waiting in queue for far too long. At least 4 hours


Edit: Super shortly after making this post, the error message under activate windows changed.
The error code is the exact same, but the Product Key field is missing. I did not do anything that could make this occur and my device is not owned by any organization.

I have recently swapped out most of my pc hardware and can no longer use my activation code and I have checked on the help pages and haven't found anything that has helped. Any suggestions?

If Windows 8 was preinstalled, the qualifying W10 inherits the same.

But there are always exceptions-Microsoft says if the license isn't misused they might help you to activate windows after swapping hardware too.

Is the new PC Windows 10 Home or Pro?

The reason I suggested activating the new hard drive, is because that will create a digital activation on the Microsoft Activation Servers for that PC's Hardware, so if things go wrong with the hard drive swap, then you will still have activated Windows 10
on the new PC on the new hard drive . . .

Of the old Windows is Windows 10 Pro, and the new Windows is Windows 10 Home, then you will not be able to activate that old hard drive on the new PC . . .
