Windows 10: Windows Activation failing after a hardware upgrade.

Basically, as title describes.


I recently upgraded the core of my PC (CPU / Mobo / RAM) and was informed that my windows following that upgrade was not activated. Fair enough. I am holding a Windows 10 license from the free upgrade from 7 that is currently tied to my microsoft account. I sign in with that account to try and activate the PC and it is telling me I don't have a valid license. Going through all available troubleshoot options and reinstalling clean have not fixed this.


I actually tried downgrading my hardware back to the old stuff and voila, activated as usual. I double checked that I had correctly logged into my microsoft account on that hardware to make sure the license was working and activated to that account, which it was and still is. Viewing my devices on my microsoft account I can see both PCs, so I am not sure if this is the issue, but I don't know what I can do to point the license to the correct machine if that is the case.


So, where can I go from here? It seems everywhere I go I am being told to buy a new license which I shouldn't need to do. I have one on my account but it simply won't activate on my upgraded machine. I have the right version of windows and the right account. It should work.

Windows 8 Pro Retail => Windows 10 Pro (Free upgrade) Fails Activation after hardware change

Hi,

I bought 2 retail licenses (one for my desktop and one for my laptop) for Windows 8 several years ago and upgraded to Windows 10 (via the free upgrade). Recently I had to change some hardware (motherboard) and I get the following error code when trying to
activate Windows: 0xC004C003.

I have tried the following, all of which have failed.

1. Troubeshoot -> I recently changed hardware on this device (I can only see my Laptop License and not my desktop)
2. Provided the Installation ID (via phone helpdesk) on two occasions.

First help desk technician suggested I buy a new Windows License and the second suggested I reinstall and use Windows 8. Both suggestions from help desk are ridiculous.

How do I proceed without having to:

1. Pay for a license I should technically already have
2. Downgrade back to Windows 8 (loose time / data)

i followed the troubleshooter steps but something goes wrong and it just says oops try again later...

any suggestions?

Windows 10 fails to update


When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.
