Windows 10: windows activation message after moving disk drive to another laptop

I had a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 installed from new. I was given a free upgrade to Windows 10 by Microsoft. That laptop died with a motherboard fault and I moved the disk to a Compaq laptop given to me by a relative. Now I get constant 'Activate Windows' messages. I read an article here that the bios gets a marker when a free upgrade is done but now I'm on a different laptop that marker remains on the dead Toshiba. Is there a way around this? This Compaq has a valid Windows 7 activation key.

Move Win7 64 image from a partition NTFS to a new drive

EDIT: After reading your first post again, is there any reason that you would now need GPT? Are you just trying to move the windows install to a new disk or is there a new motherboard involved?

If you are already booting to an NTFS partition, then it makes me wonder if after copying to the new drive, the partition isn't getting marked as Active.

Following the same steps I posted above for startup repair, you can get to a command prompt and use diskpart to see if this is the case.

Code: In the command prompt: diskpart list disk select disk 0 (disk number may be different if you have other disks connected.) list partition select partition 0 (partition number number may vary, but you want to see the boot partition which is the same as your windows partition according to the screenshot on the OP) detail partition (This should have Active: Yes or No. If it says no, since we have the partition selected, you can just use the following command in diskpart) active[/quote]

Moved drive from one toshiba laptop to another and now get activate windows message. Tried activating, but nothing works and now states I need to

purchase windows 10 to get a Key/Product code. Have no clue what to do.

 

Installing windows off of a USB stick

Step By Step from vista:
From admin cmd prompt

1. diskpart
1a. list disk
2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk
