Windows 10: Windows Activation

I just realised that it says I have an 'Education' license because that is the last key which I tried to input. Although the activation fails it seems to use that key to identify the edition I 'have'. I also tried an Enterprise key and similarly it reported my edition as being Enterprise.

So I'm looking at a clean install here to fix this using my origional Win7 key? Is this possible whilst retaining my existing files and settings?

 

Ok, that explains that. Try entering this generic Home key, YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7. I don't think it will work but it won't hurt to try. If it works it will switch you to 10 Home, but not activate. Then try entering your 7 home key.

I tried as suggested:

YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7

But it didn't work, I tried by own Win7 key after which also failed.

 

My mistake i didn't notice the OP said currently running Windows 10 Education. Very suspicious because OP buy it from someone that already installed Windows 10 education edition but in fact the laptop comes with Windows 7 home OS.
@spacebiscuit75 in order to fully activated Windows 10 you need to reinstall Windows 10 according to the Windows 7 edition it original came from, WIndows 7 home = Windows 10 home. Like Superfly suggest use Macrium free to backup your data, reformat your hard drive with new installation of Windows 10 home.

 

I was pretty sure that's what would happen, no harm in trying anyway. You'll have to reinstall 10 Home to activate, assuming your 7 key is for 7 Home.
