I don't use many of the programs found in the WindowsApps folder.

Is there a safe way to delete or remove these apps and prevent them being reinstalled by utilities such as Windows Update, SFC /Scannow and DISM?

Oddly, many of these programs (Zune Video, Zune Music, Cortana etc.) seem to be duplicates of programs that have been a part of Windows for over decade such as Media Player and Windows Search.

I'd be very interested in 'pruning' many of these programs which amount to only bloatware for the way in which I use Microsoft's OS.

    :)

    Hi Thelps.

This tutorial should help. They will be re-installed on next Feature update as that is an OS refresh.

My coping strategy is to just turn the apps off. After every feature upgrade, I revisit the settings to see that, for the most part, these apps remained turned off. Settings/Privacy/Background apps. Unpin the apps. Hide the apps icons. Then, the apps cannot be inadvertently activated.

The link that @Caledon Ken gave you pretty much covers everything! There basically are no more solutions over and above that.

The WindowsApps folder (on your desktop?) indicates that you've done a Refresh install of Windows. If so, that's how that folder and its contents got there.

Secondly, in order for us to help with this (or future problems), we need more information; could you please complete your computer specs under "My Computer". Unfortunately, it's sometimes necessary to have your complete computer specs, as well as which version of Windows you're running. Is it Windows 7, Windows 8.x, or is it Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, or maybe Windows 10 Insider Build 17083? All of these factors will give us the knowledge we need to help you. Otherwise, we're just shooting in the dark.

I will leave it to @Caledon Ken to address what needs to be done with that folder, since I've only done a Refresh install once, and that was a while back.

As to whether these apps come back like a bad penny, that can be blamed on Microsoft. As an example, in the beginning, Microsoft changed my default web browser to Microsoft Edge; it didn't matter that I had made Firefox my default. New Build after New Build, my default browsers was changed back to Edge. And, if we uninstalled a particular program/app, Microsoft put it back with each new Insider Build, no matter how many times we uninstalled it! These things are sometimes beyond our control; that's what it means to be an Insider/Beta Tester. You take the good with the bad.

If you will follow the tutorial Ken linked, I'm pretty sure some of them will stay uninstalled. Let's try one without the tutorial, though:

Click on Start>go to Candy Crush Soda Saga (or something else you want to get rid of), right click on it and then click on Uninstall. Candy Crush will uninstall, but don't be surprised if it shows back up with the next Insider Build. As they say, Stuff Happens! Sometimes this simple method isn't available; that's when the link Ken gave you will come in very handy.

And one last thing ... it's sometimes helpful to the helper if you tell us whether you're a beginner, Intermediate or Experienced user.
