  1. Windows backup fails resulting in partially backed up apps and settings

I'm subscribed to Microsoft 365 personal and business. I'm on Windows 11 developers preview and am having issues with the Windows Backup app. It used to work fine, but lately it initiates a backup, only to end about two seconds later and displaying only partially backed up apps and settings. I have a 2 terabyte NVME as internal storage, where OneDrive is located on my Asus a520me custom built PC.

    :)

  2. can't backup my apps & settings to OneDrive

    Hello,

To help you resolve the issue, you can follow the steps below:

    • Go to Settings.
    • Under backup section, select apps+settings.
    • Tap manage backups at the bottom part of the screen.
    • Select delete button.
    • Then, try to backup again by pressing back up
      now button under apps+settings.

The backup process may take a few minutes depending on how many apps and games are installed.

Let us know how it goes.

  3. Windows Phone 8.1 apps+settings Backup error - "There was a problem backing up your settings. Try again later."

Whatever you read about backups being "discontinued", I assure you that it does not apply to Windows Phone. People have figured this out without a hard reset, you just didn't read the whole thread. There are a number of solutions, but
apparently it's not one-size-fits-all, you'll need to try them all and see which one works for you. I suggest you try them in this order. After each step, try backing up to see if that step resolved the problem.

    • Delete your old backup - some people say that backups from WP 8.0 interfere with WP 8.1. This was apparently my problem. Once I deleted the old backup, I was able to back up again. Go to settings > backup > apps + settings > manage backups
      > delete.
    • Bring all your apps up to date - I didn't have to do this, but some have claimed this solved their problem. I
did remove an app that was having problems updating from the downloads list, but I'm not sure that had anything to do with my problem.
    • Switch off Live Lock Screen - This is another feature that some people have cited as causing a conflict. The Live Lock Screen Beta was already causing me tons of problems, so I already had it disabled. If you have any other lock background
set, best to just set it back to Bing. Although I had no problems leaving it on MSN Weather.
    • Remove Simple Calendar - I have no idea what this is, but apparently some people say removing it fixes this issue.
    • Check your Microsoft Account credentials - Your Microsoft Account may be improperly configured. Check settings > email + accounts > Microsoft account and make sure everything looks good.

Please remember to be patient. My backup took about 30 minutes to complete on a Lumia 1020, but your mileage may vary. If you are still getting the "There was a problem backing up your settings" message, here are a few more last-ditch options you can try.

    • Go into a Microsoft Store and ask a tech for help - a few people have reported success with this. Chances are, someone there has dealt with this issue before.
    • Uninstall apps - some people have reported success with uninstalling sketchy apps. If you have lots of free time on your hands, you might try uninstalling apps one by one until the backup works.
    • Hard reset your phone - this will probably erase all of the data on your phone, so please don't do it unless you have tried everything else that you can. Windows Phone will still restore all your apps, but your pictures and texts, etc.
may be lost. I have heard from some people that Windows Phone is able to restore from a partial backup, so even if you are getting the "There was a problem backing up your settings", if the "manage backups" page shows a few hundred MB used it may be a good
enough backup for you to restore most of your data.
I hope that this helps someone else to resolve this issue. Microsoft, please take note– there is obviously not specific enough error messaging going on here if there are so many failure points. Hope this will be fixed in an update.

Windows backup fails resulting in partially backed up apps and settings

    Backup fails

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    I did Step 1 OK.

Doing Step 2: Volume Shadow Copy is already running, but I have no SPP Notification Service in the list of services!

I just tried to backup, and it failed again!

Back in August when the Backup failed, someone told me about STARTING VSS. I did that then, and it appears to be running since then. He did not say anything about SPP. I replied to him, but he disappeared!
