Windows 10: Windows Backup Feature is Broken

I have an empty, old HDD that I want to use as my backup drive. I use Windows Backup and manually select the folders that I want to be backed up daily. Under where I can choose how often to back up the files, there's an option that says "Keep my backups" and you can select for a week, for two weeks, for a year, until space is needed, etc. I choose "until space is needed" because I don't need old backups, I'd prefer if Windows just overwrites the old ones.

However, time and time again, the old HDD I'm using to back up these files fills up and it WILL NOT delete the old backups automatically. I have to manually format the drive, wiping it clean, and reselect each and every folder anew once the HDD fills up.

Is this just Windows Backup system being broken? Or is this a problem on my end?

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.

 

Windows 10 System Image Backup Suggested Features

Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore (Windows 7)

SUGGESTED CHANGES:

1. Eliminate ALL references to "Windows 7".

2. To the extent necessary, MANAGE "Windows Defender" and "File History" to PREVENT INTERFERENCE during SYSTEM IMAGE BACKUP.

3. Warn user to suspend 3rd Party Product SCANNING during Windows System Image Backup (ie: McAfee Anti-Virus Real-Time Scanning and Scheduled Scan ).

4. Show CURRENT FREE SPACE on selected Backup Location [ie: Iomega (F].

5. SHOW DETAILS should Expand current page, not create a new page.

6. SHOW DETAILS suggested FEATURES:

6a. Overall Completion Percent

6b. List of completed Activities

6c. Completion Percent of Current In-Process Activity

6d. List of Activities not yet started

I invite the Microsoft Community to comment on and add to this post to help improve the Windows 10 Backup and Restore Feature.

Fixed fan controls yes. Annoying profiles yes. Buggy code yes.

I'd rather just set it and forget it as the feature list of RBE suggested it was capable of doing.
