Windows 10: Windows backup, restore to a new PC

I am trying to use Windows backup for the first time to move apps and settings to a new PC. The source system is running Windows 11 Pro 23H2 and since the new PC isn't completely up I don't know the exact Windows 11 version it is running. The source data is in the cloud as far as I can tell. I am doing the init on the target system and I select restore instead of set up new PC. Find Backup does not find a backup. Any suggestions or do I need to set this system up as a new PC?

Restoring Windows 10 Image using Macrium Reflect


In addition to the above. Here's my suggestion in step by step.
I assume you have Macrium Installed in your current HD and already made a backup copy.

1. Connect your new HD via USB port and boot up.
2. Run Macrium, click on Restore tab then select the Backup Image that you made to restore
3. click on "select a different target disk" then select your new HD as destination
   
   
   
4. Proceed to restore then Shutdown and disconnect the old HD and replace with the new HD
5. Boot up with your new HD.

I'm afraid you still don't seem to have understood my question.

Let me try again step by step.

My plan:

• Upgrade old PC running W7 to W10
• Buy new PC with W10 pre-installed
• Back up files and settings on old PC
• Restore that backup onto new PC
• Install application software onto new PC
• New PC becomes my default PC, old one goes into retirement.

I was aware that Windows 7 Easy Transfer would not run on W10 which was why I proposed this option.

I have now found an article which gives me confidence that I am on the right track. Although it refers to an earlier operating system

Free hard drive backup/restore program?

I am looking for a free (freeware) program that will back up and restore a hard drive. I'm looking to clone a few external hard drives. If the program will backup the used space instead of the whole drive this will be awesome! Thanks for any suggestions.
