I would do two things, uninstall drivers for mouse and keyboard and let windows re-install. I would also look in those sections, within device manager, for hidden devices and remove them as well.

If this does not fix run sfc /scannow at a command prompt(admin) just to be sure. It likely won't find anything.

You could also try an inplace repair / upgrade. Assuming you are on V1709 it will be a repair.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

I always recommend you have your data backed up.

My laptop has started acting peculiarly. Was working fine then the mouse cursor got stuck down the bottom left corner of the screen. It was glitching and wouldn't move elsewhere at all. I am using a USB wireless mouse. Tried other USB ports and no luck, tried another wireless mouse that is working and it did the same thing. I shut the computer down. On reboot the keyboard wouldn't work. Restarted again and was all good. Laptop was working well and was shut down properly at the end of the night.

Yesterday morning I tried to boot it up and it wouldn't get past the Win 10 blue flag logo with spinning balls. Had to hard shutdown. Tried again and again and again. Sometimes it would say Attempting Startup Repair sometimes it wouldn't. It never went through to the Advanced Startup options. I eventually got sick of it and put in a Win 10 recovery disc I have. That got me through to the startup options and I was able to do a system restore to the day before (I think it said it was a critical update restore point). It restored fine and started up well and I thought nothing more of it. It worked as it usually does with no problems and was shutdown properly a couple of hours later.

This morning it did the same thing. Stuck on the logo screen or on the attempting startup repairs. No matter how many times I forced it to shut down I couldn't get it to any options. I tried the Recovery disc and it didn't work either. It still stalled on the logo screen. I created a USB recovery drive in the case the disc drive wasn't working and it still stalled at the same point. I could not get it to the startup options.

I pulled the harddrive out and tried it in another laptop. Same outcome. I plugged the harddrive into an external enclosure and hooked it up to the other laptop. I ran chkdsk /f f: on the hardrive. It completed and the only thing of note that I could see it said was "Correcting errors in the master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute and Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap. Windows made corrections to the file system. No further action is required.

I was literally stabbing in the dark. The harddrive is new, previous one failed and this one is about 3 maybe 4 months old.

I put the harddrive back in the laptop and started it up. Left it alone and about an hour later I noticed it had loaded up!! It definitely still took a longer than usual but it is on and working normally. I now need to figure out what is happening and why. I am at the point that I don't want to shut it down at all for fear it won't load again. Could anyone help me figure out what I should be doing or looking for? Have done a lot of googling and the only account that I came across that was the same issues and recovery not booting turned out to be a HDD failure. Really hoping that isn't the case for me.

    Help please! Thank you.

    :)

  5. Hi Pailin19. Welcome to the TenForums @Pailin19

First things first I would get my data backed up. Likely you've already done this having just been through a harddrive failure.

I guess the new drive could be faulty, anything is possible, but I think I would also look upstream given you just had a failure.

I would check laptop memory, although it has not been BSOD'ing or has it?

Most devices are set to auto restart, I would disable this so you can if you are experiencing.

Right click Start => Run => type sysdm.cpl => enter => Advance Tab => in Startup and Recovery section => Settings => uncheck Automatic restart, Overwrite any existing files.

If you have a BSOD you will now have to power down but at least you will see it. You could also find your most recent memory.dmp and see date on it.

I know going back several months is hard but any other changes to laptop or issues. Maybe random restarts, new wifi card, change of AV product, accidental drop.

Hopefully other members will chime in with their ideas.

No. No BSOD or any other issues.

Computer has been running normally, restarted and shutdown a couple of times since I first posted. Tonight the issue seems to have reoccurred. My daughter was playing Minecraft on it and had the mouse glitch happen where the mouse pointer gets stuck in the bottom left of the screen. I used task manager to shutdown everything I could see and the mouse wouldn’t stop being stuck. I signed out and then back in, same thing happening. I put the computer to sleep and upon waking it the mouse worked again and the keyboard didn’t. Exact same problem that I encountered last time, once the mouse came back the keyboard stopped working. I had to hard shut it down as it froze up and now back to the infernal blue logo screen and no boot up.

I am at at a loss. Clearly the mouse and keyboard are behind the problem or symptoms of the problem. The mouse is an external one because the touchpad stopped working a long time ago. Using another working mouse does the same thing.
