Windows 10: Windows Broken, Apps Disappear When Trying To Drag.

This is a recent problem that didn't come from a Windows Update as far as I can tell so here's what I happens:


I open an app, I click on the top bar of it to try and move it around because I have an ultrawide so I have lots of real estate; this causes the app to just disappear. HOWEVER, it's still running in my task manager and taskbar.

But when I click on it in my taskbar one of 2 things happens:

#1: it opens up as a tiny slit in my top left corner that I cannot resize or maximize as I can only see the 'close' button

#2: it doesn't open back up anywhere but is still running.


The only way for me to open it back up and have it be usable is for me to hover over it in my taskbar, right click on the pop-up, and press maximize. Then if I try to click-n-drag again it disappears, if I minimize it works properly, if I un-maximize it disappears again, I can't move it, I can't size it. Thanks to this I can't use my ultrawide properly and it's disrupting my workflow can someone please help me figure out what's wrong?


The reason I don't believe this is a windows update is it just randomly started happening yesterday and it's persisted to today. I updated Windows now and it didn't fix it + I clean installed my graphics drivers to try and fix it. I also did sfc/scannow.

Dragging apps to desktop for shortcuys

It's possible that some settings are preventing you from adding shortcuts to the desktop. We'd like to learn more about your concern so that we could provide the proper resolution. We just have a few questions for you:

• Which build version of Windows 10 is on your computer? To check, click
  Start, type winver, and press Enter. For example, 14393.1066.
• Does this happen when you try dragging all apps to the desktop, or just a specific app?
• Are you using an administrator account?
• Is your computer connected to a private domain?
• What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

As an initial recommendation, we suggest following these steps as a workaround:

• Right-click on any empty part of the desktop.
• Click New > Shortcut.
  
• Navigate to the folder location of the app you want and select it.
• Click OK.

Mail app will not open on 10041.

This is the suggested solution below if you haven't already tried it.

In this Windows 10 build 10041, the Mail, Calendar, and People apps may be broken due to a licensing issue with the Store Beta. To get these apps working again, you need to follow these steps:

• Open powershell as administrator
• Run the command Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “*windowscommunicationsapps*”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online
• Re-install Mail, People and Calendar from the Store (green tile)

 

Drag and Drop

Hi Charles,

the steps you suggested didn't work for me but, when pressing the escape key it somehow expanded the drive and by using drag and drop to the single file in the list worked.

In the past I could drag and drop multiple folders onto the drive on the network computer(s). Doing it on individual folders will take far too long and time consuming and is not an option.

Microsoft should be able to identify what is blocking it and issue a fix.

My machine is multi boot so tomorrow I will try with Windows 7.
