Windows calculator does not accept it's own copied text as input

I often copy+paste number into notepad as temporary storage while using calculator, but it doesn't seem to work well in W10 calculator.

For instance, I got the number 8.1760941055209529296365797509343e-6 as a result of some calculations. Attempting to paste that back in gives "Invalid input". *Confused

    :)

  2. Win 10 Calculator - Scientific data entry

    Hi

I must be missing something on the WIN 10 calculator in scientific mode.

I'm trying to enter an exponential equation using e to a power, but it appears this calculator does not accept algebraic input

Any ideas on how to enter the following:

    200 x e^[(-0.693/14.4) x 28.8]

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Windows 10 Calculator app focus fail

I know this tread is ancient - but it still drives me nuts every time I work on bills. Microsoft, please fix the calculator bugs. Open in focus from the keyboard, have it ready to accept keyboard input, and if I hit the keyboard button again, it brings
the existing open calculator back into focus and ready to be typed into again. That is how the windows 7 calculator worked... So sad.

Ok, just tried the number you show and also got the same invalid error. Don't know why that is, perhaps it's the number scheme and they fact that you're essentially trying to input a number like that. Perhaps someone with more mathematical skills than I could explain. I did try the number without the "e-6" and was able to past successfully....

I think it has to be in Scientific mode. In Standard Mode, it will give that error, in Scientific mode it will accept it.

I already tried it in Scientific mode, I still get an "Invalid Input"...

I think trying to past the number with the "e" in it won't work by design. If you imputed the number manually, you don't have an "e" key to input the e.

This is where we could use a mathematician understanding calculators to help answer this one. That's not me *Redface

It possibly is a bug, the number is "too long"
the number is in scientific notation and you insert "e" using Exp:
paste the whole number then press: Exp +- 8
    in the calculator

P.S. if you try a short number it works:

    12e-8

I didn't insert the e-6, just the rest of the number.

Not so much a bug, but there is probably a limit on how many significant figures can be parsed when pasted.

Yes, too many numbers. I tried with 3 more numbers and got invalid input.

yes you can copy but you cannot paste

Of course, that number of significant figures is silly really anyway.

This reminds me of the old joke (sanitised here for propriety).

A guy has to choose between mathematician or engineer for a new job and sets them a task to decide.

He gets a bottle of vintage champagne and puts it at one end of room, and puts two guys at other end.

He asks how many steps it would take if you stepped half the distance on first step, quarter on next, eighth on next and so on halving each time. Whoever gets the right answer gets the job and the bubbly.

The mathematician says "it is a trick question, you can never reach it".

The engineer says 11. The potential boss replies "but the mathematician is correct - it is not possible".

The engineer says "true but after 11 steps, I will be so close it makes sfa difference"!

He gets the job and champers!

Windows calculator does not accept it's own copied text as input

Which is what I did in my initial post *Wink

As a test I removed the last 3 numbers before the "e" and it worked...

So yeah, it appears there are too many numbers in the equation.

I prefer the version I heard at Uni while doing an engineering degree.

It starts with a mathematician and an engineer at a disco who spot a couple of girls the other side of the dance floor. It's the engineer who proposes a novel way of crossing to ask them to dance.... go half way, then half the remaining distance, repeat until we get over there. The mathematician says "but we'll never reach them" to which the engineer replies "well... close enough for all practical purposes."

As I said, I sanitised the post - lol.
