Thank you for the suggestion. Where on TechNet is this "Wim ISO"? Normally when I see mention of "wim" I think Windows Image file such as a ".wim" file. They're disk images which are different from ISOs. Is there any way I can get a direct link or at the very least a link to where that information was pulled from? Much appreciated! Thank you. If I came across the wrong information entirely then please disregard. I've found it's easier to help those that are willing to help themselves but perhaps I'm just over complicating things, haha! Are you running the PC on an enterprise network and logging on to a domain? If not, the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection Service won't run and shouldn't be started. It's not intended for stand-alone PCs.

The service that should be running (on Automatic) is Windows Defender Antivirus Service. If you have Cloud-based protection and Automatic sample submission turned on the (Manual) Windows Defender Antivirus Network Inspection Service should also be running.

The previously suggested in-place repair install is quite painless and preserves all your installed apps, settings and files. It should fix things if you can't get them going yourself.

 

No. I do not log in to a domain and I am not a part of an enterprise network. Windows Defender itself will not run at all and is completely broken. Please read my previous posts for further information. Thank you.

 

I did. The service you tried to start can't run unless you are on an enterprise network so it hardly surprising it gave an error. The in-place repair install is a simple repair option and I'm surprised you refuse to try it.

 

I just read somewhere that if you use that tool, your PC will not boot. I tried Avast and it is bloatware, I just restore an image from yesterday to avoid using it.

 

Quite simply because if I am going to go through the trouble to reinstall Windows on top of Windows I might as well start completely over at that point. I'd prefer to keep this going as a point of ego (as explained before) and it angers me Avast! caused all this simply by existing on my PC. I will never make that mistake again!

 

I don't disagree with you that Avast! should be considered malicious at this point but I can assure you I ran that tool and I'm still able to boot. I wouldn't put it past them to be guilty of causing a myriad of issues but with this one I am unable to recreate it.

I really wish there was another solution but it looks like I'll be breaking out Parted Magic to format my SSD and starting from a clean slate. Thanks for all your help! This thread can be closed on the condition it is not marked as "Solved" if possible.

 

I have the same issue. The only other AV I have had is MBAM free. It has never caused a problem b4 since it isn't a running AV. But I did uninstall it with no change.
