Windows 10: Windows Defender ATP EDR capability for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

We’re announcing the general availability of Windows Defender ATP’s endpoint detection & response (EDR) capability for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, helping customers achieve the best security possible while transitioning to Windows 10.

With Windows 10 we’ve built the most secure Windows ever, by hardening the platform itself and by developing Windows Defender ATP – a unified endpoint security platform for preventative protection, post-breach detection, and automated investigation & response.

To help customers stay secure while upgrading to Windows 10, we’ve built an EDR solution for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 that is simple to deploy and seamless to end-users, providing behavioral based threat detection, investigation and response capabilities.

Windows Defender ATP for Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 provides deep visibility on activities that are happening on endpoints, including process, file, network, registry and memory activities, providing security teams with rich, correlated insights into activities and threats happening on older versions of Windows.

Detections and events from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are surfaced in Windows Defender Security Center alongside data from other endpoints, providing a single pane of glass for security teams to investigate and respond to incidents across their environment.

We’ve previously made this solution available to customers through public preview, working closely with our customers to validate, fine tune and refine the service. We're happy to announce that this functionality is now generally available, allowing customers to deploy at scale across their environment.

Announcing: Windows Defender ATP support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

With Windows 10 we built the most secure Windows ever, by hardening the platform itself and by developing Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) – a unified endpoint security platform that helps stop breaches. This means that for the first time we’ve built threat and exploit protection, and Endpoint Detection & Response right into the operating system, powered by the cloud. We hear from our customers security is one of the biggest motivators for their move to Windows 10. Meanwhile, we know that while in their transition, some may have a mix of Windows 10 and Windows 7 devices in their environments. We want to help our customers achieve the best security possible on their way to Windows 10 ahead of the end of support for Windows 7 in January 2020.

That’s why today, we are pleased to announce that we are adding Windows Defender ATP down-level support for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1.

Starting this summer, customers moving to Windows 10 can add Windows Defender ATP Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) functionality to their Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 devices, and get a holistic view across their endpoints.

For Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, we are building a behavioral based EDR solution to give security teams rich insights into threats on their endpoints. All detections and events are surfaced in Windows Defender Security Center, the cloud-based console for Windows Defender ATP. Security teams benefit from correlated alerts for known and unknown adversaries, additional threat intelligence, and a detailed machine timeline for further investigations and manual response options.

Although this solution can run side-by-side with third-party antivirus solutions, it is better together with Windows Defender Antivirus (also known as System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP) for down-level). With Windows Defender Antivirus, security teams can see all malware detections and trigger response actions to prevent the spread of malware, in the same console.

Windows Defender 8(8/8.1) vs Windows Defender 10

Hi Andrew,

I meant to ask...for example in windows defender 8, it comes with AV and F/W, what else can it provide ? similarly, for windows defender 10, does it provide more security features than defender 10....that was my initial question for clarification.

And also coming to my ATP part of the question, I think I can also purchase ATP capability to enhance the security capabilities in addition to windows defender 10 security capabilities. So, does it means if MS provides ATP compatibility with windows 8 OS,
does this mean I can wait for another year before I decide to migrate to windows 10 and at the same time Avail ATP features on my windows 8 OS?
