Windows 10: Windows Defender for Win10 v1709 and Rootkits?

In the latest Fall Creators Update, does Windows Defender have the ability to scan for Rootkits which are hidden during boot time?

Windows Defender (now Windows Defender Anti-Virus) - what's the latest version, please? Win10

It was confusing this morning when I powered up my back-up laptop at 5.45am and found that in addition to the Adobe Flash and Win10 v1709 updates previously installed on this (my main), on my back-up was also a Windows Defender definitions update to 1.257.12.0
KB2267602. (This laptop, my main one, has 1.257.283.0 installed and they are not sync'd.)

The Creators Fall finished installing nine hours later (that's another story) and Defender definitions were now 1.257.283.0. The same as my main laptop was showing this morning.

But having just looked at my main laptop, the Defender definitions here have changed again and I now have 1.257.313.0. So the Defender definitions on my back-up laptop is again lagging behind.

Is this normal please?

They haven`t fixed the home group problem but at least the copy and paste function now works again in Win10 v1709 .That`s 1 win

Scanning Rootkits with Windows Defender - Microsoft Community

 

Windows defender offline used to be only a stand alone product.
It became integrated into Windows 10 in either 1511 or 1607.

It will scan for rootkits:

I tried it and seemed to scan it with only the quick scan. But is there a way to do a Full scan as well when selecting Offline scanning?

Also I noticed that it doesn’t provide scan results. Is there a way to check?

 

WDO is only done if fast mode. The rest of the scanning is done as a full scan when online.

So just to confirm, that this Offline scans do detect Rootkits if discovered, is this correct?

Under Virus and threat protection > scan history, there is no listing for Offline Scan History.

 

Windows Defender can detect rootkits, then tell you to run Defender Offline to remove them.
