Windows 10: Windows Defender is unavailable

Hi Microsoft Community :I mistakenly turned off my windows defender by "windows defender control". And after a installation, When I was trying to enable it again, It shows windows defender is missing. And I can't open windows security app. It showing "The item you selected is unavailable". And windows defender service and windows security service are not showing in services. Please help me in this problem.

Thank you for your quick response. You have always been quick to respond.

This morning I updated the HP laptop to 21H2 through the normal Windows update. Do you still think I should do a repair install with 21H2 ISO?

I shall try it later tonight and report to hdmi. He must be waiting in the wings.

He has not been doing a Repair install ever since post #2 so he is unlikely to bother now.

Windows Defender problem

Hi Ernst,

To troubleshoot this issue, we suggest that you check the Windows Defender service if it's running. If you are using a third party spyware/malware program, it may disable the Windows Defender service. To do this, please follow the steps below:

• Press Windows + R key.
• Type services.msc.
• Right-click Windows Defender service and click
  Start.

Let us know the result.
