Windows Defender Running Background Scans Everyday

I'm trying to prevent Windows Defender from running a background scan everyday. The main reason is that it causes the fan on my laptop to run at full throttle for over an hour until the scan completes, but at the same time, a daily scan is overkill, especially with real time protection turned since it scans files on arrival.

I have tried changing numinous settings in order to disable the background scan, but Windows Defender insists that it needs to perform one everyday. Here's what I've tried...

    • Disabled/Removed the Windows Defender scheduled scan entry in Task Scheduler. Still runs a background scan.
    • Used Windows PowerShell (as admin) and Set-Mppreference to change the -ScheduledScanDay and -RemediationScheduleDay parameters from everyday to never. Still runs a background scan.
    • Added a ScheduleDay REG_DWORD key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scan with a decimal value of 8 for never. Still runs a background scan.

With all 3 of the above implemented, Windows Defender still runs a background scan, as indicated by the Antimalware Service Executable processes running at ~40% CPU usage. The background scan can be canceled while running and temporarily delayed if I open Windows Defender and turn off real time protection, wait several seconds, then re-enable it.

How do I stop the background scan from running everyday? I get the feeling that Windows Defender is just ignoring/overriding the registry policies and Mppreferences and is using its default settings.

  3. Windows Defender Running Background Scans Everyday

    Hello, Kflash08

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

It seems like you have tried various methods to disable the daily background scan in Windows Defender, but it's still persistently running. In some cases, Windows updates or certain system changes might reset these settings, causing Windows Defender to revert to its default behavior. To ensure the changes stick and prevent the daily background scan from running, you can try the following steps:

    1. Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc):
      • Press Win + R, type "gpedit.msc," and hit Enter.
      • Navigate to "Computer Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "Windows Components" > "Microsoft Defender Antivirus" > "Real-time protection."
      • Look for the setting called "Turn off real-time protection," and set it to "Disabled."

      • Note: Group Policy can only be enabled in the Pro license Edition, not for the Home license. If your license is the Home Edition, please see the following solution

Disclaimer: Follow this step to temporarily turn off real-time Microsoft Defender antivirus protection in Windows Security. However, keep in mind that if you do so, your device may be vulnerable to threats. So please turn on it immediately once issue fixed.
    2. Windows Registry:
      • Press Win + R, type "regedit," and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.
      • Navigate to the following key:

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
      • If you don't see a key called "Windows Defender," you can create it by right-clicking on "Microsoft" > "New" > "Key" and naming it "Windows Defender."
      • Inside the "Windows Defender" key, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with the name "DisableAntiSpyware" and set its value to "1."

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click here to view the article.
    3. Windows Services:
      • Press Win + R, type "services.msc," and hit Enter to open the Services window.
      • Look for the service called "Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service."
      • Right-click on the service, select "Properties," and change the "Startup type" to "Disabled."
After trying these steps, restart your computer and check if the daily background scan is disabled.

  4. Windows Defender Not Closing its running at the background

Windows Defender seems to be running constantly

    Hi Jeff,

Windows Defender Antivirus helps protect your PC against malware (malicious software) like viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software. It is also providing real-time protection when malware tries to install itself
or run on your PC. That’s why it is always running in the background if you check the Task Manager.

If you want to temporarily turn off Windows Defender Antivirus, follow these steps:

    • Click the Start button, then type
      Windows Defender Security Center
      .
    • Open Windows Defender Security Center, then select
Virus & threat protection > Threat settings.
    • Turn off Real-time protection.

    Note:

    • If you temporarily turn off the Windows Defender Antivirus, your device may be vulnerable to threats.
    • Scheduled scans will continue to run. However, files that are downloaded or installed will not be scanned.

Let us know how it goes.
