Windows 10: Windows Defender not honoring my exclusions

OK so I have some terminal emulator software in which we dump a bunch of data to a .txt file for later analysis. Windows Defender (Windows 10) was scanning the files making that capture very slow. So I did the following:


1) Excluded the emulator software via process and folder location

2) Excluded the capture.txt file from Windows Defender

3) Excluded the .txt extension from Windows Defender


Yet when I run that capture it runs slow still. So I open up process mon and filter by MsMpEng.exe sure enough, it's still scanning the file as the capture is taking place. I've moved that .txt file from a desktop to random folders, created new folders and excluded those etc... Nothing seems to help


I verified in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Exclusions that my extensions exist and they do. So that's not it.


Any suggestions?

Unable to Remove Exclusions from Windows Defender

Thank you for posting back. If you trust a file, file type, folder, or a process that Windows Defender Antivirus has detected as malicious, you can stop Windows Defender Antivirus from alerting you or blocking the program by adding the file to
the exclusion list. It seems that it was added automatically. We suggest that you follow these steps:

• Go to Settings and select Update & security.
• Click Windows Defender.
• Look for Exclusions and select Add an exclusion.
• Navigate to the file, folder, or process, and select Exclude this file.

If the steps provided did not work, we recommend that you boot your device to
Safe Mode and redo the process.
