  1. Windows Defender Offline + reset forces a Bios update

    Hi there,

I'm hoping everyone can help shed some light on an issue that's come up on my ASUS laptop. I've included my laptop specs below, running Windows Home 20H2. The issue I'm having is as follows:

1 Noticed some strange behavior as in, System using way too much CPU %, around the 50% mark at times, often causing my computer to jam up while inactive, or sometimes while active.

2 As a result of 1, I decided to investigate via anti-rootkit software, nothing came up after using Malwarebytes, GMER etc.

3 Lastly, tried to use Windows Defender Offline, to see if I could diagnose the problem pre-boot. What happened here was that, after resetting, WDO loaded, but never scanned my PC. It took about 2 mins in all.

4 So I thought, OK. After some research, the likely culprit was corrupt System files, so I decided to Repair Upgrade by way of Media Creation Tool, create an ISO, then mount, then install.

5 Everything seemed to have gone according to plan, until the following happened. Now, as I launch WDO, my system is forcing me to update my BIOS I'm currently using ver 204, ASUS, UEFI. Unfortunately, my battery is completely shot, so my laptop is plugged in 24/7, no mobility at all. I think that this is causing my BIOS update to totally fail. I can skip the update via ctrl +alt + del, which then takes me to explorer.exe, which is OK - I can continue using my computer.

6 So all in all, after performing the Repair Upgrade of Win 10, I am now forced to perform a BIOS update, which I cannot perform, because I believe that there's some hardware malfunction in my battery itself, and as a result, I cannot run Windows Offline Scanner to check for rootkits. Note that when I restart my computer regularly, without attempting to run WDO, I am not prompted to upgrade. Also note that pre-repair upgrade, this forced update was not a problem, WDO appeared to load, then skipped the entire GUI scan process.

7 Why would attempting to use WDO now force an unwanted BIOS upgrade?

Would love some ideas from everyone, can't figure this one out.

Windows Defender Offline for Windows 10

Tried this suggestion and it did not work. Tried to boot from USB with Windows Defender Offline transferred from a safe computer. Would not boot from USB. Message "Secure Boot Violation, Invalid Signature Detected, Check secure boot policy in Setup"
Any suggestions on next steps for a Windows 10 compatible version of Windows Defender Offline?

  3. Windows 10 Reset (remove files, no disk wipe) fails with Inaccessible Boot Device; Defender Offline fails with 0x8007002

Two identical Dell Inspiron 660 systems (one for each child):

    • Win7 --> Win 10 upgrades went uneventfully, normal function afterward.
    • 1st system then put through Windows 10 Reset procedure with file removal AND disk wipe, completed successfully, normal function
    • 2nd system then put through Windows 10 Reset procedure with file removal WITHOUT disk wipe --> procedure fails:
      • INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE error is thrown, with an endless reboot cycle
    • Based on
      this thread
      reference to
      KB2673509
, Windows Defender Offline downloaded and run to create USB installation
    • USB device inserted into affected system
    • Boot device sequence manually directed to USB during reboot cycle via BIOS <F12> key function
    • Windows Defender Offline initiates, but halts throwing error 0x8007002

    • This code
      appears to be
related to a problem with Windows update, which I can not rationalize given that this is explicitly an
      offline tool.
What are the suggestions for next step(s)?

    What the hell, windows defender?

Installing major updates like the April update will reset pretty much all Windows features including Windows Defender.
