Windows 10: Windows Defender platform update 4.18.1806.18062 repeats infinitely and uses unbounded disk...

Today Windows showed me a notification that my disk was running out of space, which I thought was ludicrous, so I looked into which folders were using up the most space. That's when I noticed that the folder "Program Files\Windows Defender\platform" was in excess of 75 GB, and was full of subfolders named "4.18.1806.18062-0", "4.18.1806.18062-1", "4.18.1806.18062-2", etc.


It looks like there's a Windows Update item (Defender platform update - KB4052623) that has been trying to install itself unsuccessfully, and apparently it creates a new subfolder under "platform" every time it tries updating (?). The error given by Windows Update is 0x80070643, and when trying to update using the Windows Update MiniTool, the error is 0x80240022.


Is there a solution or workaround for this? I have tried all the usual Windows Update troubleshooter tools, scanning the filesystem, etc. I don't use any third-party AV tools, and I haven't changed anything in my system configuration recently.

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

SEtting up automatic updates for windows defender on windows 8

I have found this on the internet en have set up a task for automatic definitions update for Windows Defender but a window pops up when this starts to run.
Is there a way to set this without any window popping up so that it just runs in the background?

Now I'm using
"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate -MMPC

Defender update repeats 3 times and then says its ok


Build 14371, while checking updates, windows defender update shows up for about 1 second and then stops. Rechecking repeats the defender update and after 3 attempts says I am up to date. It never downloads, installs etc. It is repeatable, 3 cycles and then stops. Listed as KB2267602 1.223.2610.0

UPDATE 1.223.2610.0 was changed to 1.223.2614.0 and that one installed without issue. ??
