  1. Windows defender public network setting is blocking a local device

I have a local device on my network that I was trying to have send data to a simple server on my laptop. Windows Defender is blocking this communication. When I turn off public network protection communication works. My understanding is 192.168 devices are considered to be on the private network? Why would disabling the public network firewall allow this to work?As a follow-up question I have also tried adding public and private both inbound and outbound rules to try and free up communication while still having the the global public firewall on. Unfortunately this does not work.See the follow

  2. Network showing as public

    Hi Connor,

By default, the public network location type is assigned to any new networks when they are first connected. A public network is considered to be shared with the world, with no protection between the local computer and any other computer. Therefore,
the Windows Firewall rules associated with the public profile are the most restrictive.

To change settings from public to private, follow the steps below:

    • Open the Locale Security Policy.
    • In the left pane, click/tap on Network List Manager Policies.
    • In the right pane of Network List Manager Policies, double click/tap on your network name
    • Click/tap on the Network Location tab.
    • Under Location type, select Private.
    • Under User permissions, select (dot) User cannot change location.
    • Click/tap on OK, and close Local Security Policy.

Note: You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to change the network location of a network adapter.

Let us know if you have other questions.

  3. Windows Defender Firewall has blocked some features on networks.

A Windows box popped up saying:

Windows Defender Firewall has blocked some features of Host Process for Setting Synchronization on all public and private networks. Choose: Allow Access or Cancel. There are two boxes a) private networks and b) public networks. There's a check mark in
    Public networks.

    What to do??
