Windows 10: Windows defender running unwanted scans

Discus and support Windows defender running unwanted scans in AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security to solve the problem; So I scheduled all of my scans for windows defender, as far as I can tell, to happen when my laptop is plugged in at night and when I am not using it....     Windows defender running unwanted scans


    So I scheduled all of my scans for windows defender, as far as I can tell, to happen when my laptop is plugged in at night and when I am not using it. However, despite my best efforts to stop them, it runs scans all of the time during the middle of the day, managing to take up a gig and a half of ram and make my computer sound like it is trying to take flight. I used the task scheduler in windows 10. If anyone has some insight on how to get this to stop it would be much appreciated.

    thanks for your comprehensive reply. I'll be honest, I'm not even sure if it's actually Windows Defender that starts hogging my PC randomly after idle periods, but I just presumed it was because it's the only change I've made recently. On one occasion, I
    did open up the Windows Defender UI and there was no scan running, but I thought maybe it was doing something in the background. I'll try the steps you suggest anyway.

    Defender not Running Regular Scan


    I've never understood the need some people feel to set up a scheduled task to run a Defender scan. For the past year the automatic maintenance has run Defender scans for me.

    That is, until the Anniversary Upgrade - it broke something and Defender never ran another scan. It finally alerted me that a scan was long overdue. I followed the suggestion on another thread...
    Windows Defender No Longer Performs AutoScan
    ...and the automatic maintenance scans are back to running regularly again.
