Windows 10: Windows Defender runs full scan in background without asking me

sometimes when i try playing a video, or starting a program , video is slow even if I have good internet, programs appear to be extremely slow including task manager. so , i opened task manager and checked that there is no problem with startup items, everything is disabled. and i noticed that "Antimalware Service Executable" is taking too much cpu, and task manager won't let me end process or stop serviceafter some time, i get a notification of Windows Defender that i get after full scan. WHY is Windows Defender running full scan in background without asking/prompting me. any way to disable?

I did the suggested registry change and it's now listed on the desktop context menu.. but all this does is ask if I want to open it, update, or start a scan... I was hoping for the option where you right click a specific file and it will have listed 'scan with windows defender' like other antivirus programs have.. MSE had it. I'll keep looking around to see if I can find it in the meantime..

Defender not Running Regular Scan


I've never understood the need some people feel to set up a scheduled task to run a Defender scan. For the past year the automatic maintenance has run Defender scans for me.

That is, until the Anniversary Upgrade - it broke something and Defender never ran another scan. It finally alerted me that a scan was long overdue. I followed the suggestion on another thread...
Windows Defender No Longer Performs AutoScan
...and the automatic maintenance scans are back to running regularly again.
