Windows 10: windows defender security center dosn't start correctly

when i try to open the security center i get the window but then it takes a couple seconds and then just closes reliability center says there is a problem as well, i ran SFC and DISM and they both say nothing is wrong i also attempted a restore but that froze so i powered down and now i'm looking here for some help.

Windows 10: Windows Defender will not turn on *SOLVED*

This worked great, but only if Security center is turned off. As soon as security center turns on, it shuts off Defender and I can't start it until I disable the security center service, go back into the registry and change the values again. Once I do
that, Defender will start up and run all day long. AS SOON as Security center is turned on, it kills Windows defender and I have to do the whole thing over again. Was working great up until yesterday when the latest Cumulative update was installed, then after
the install I have been having these issues with Defender. Currently no other Antivirus installed, and Windows defender running fine with security center disabled

Sorry for this my Bust i looked in the all apps list and opened it from there but still it dosn't open from the updates area where it's listed as well?

not sure if there is a real issue now

Run SFC Command in Windows 10

If System Restore does not work, run SFC/Scannow for corrupt files. You may need to restore at a later date.

 

Do you have any security software installed?

Does it report any error code number?

Are you using a High Contrast mode?

A rather surprising fix for a similar problem here...

I've tried it and High Contrast #1 and #2 seem to cause Defender problems, the others seem to be OK.

yes i have high contrast on, so i have to loose my visual settings for Defender to work properly?

I found on testing that the High Contrast Black and High Contrast White themes worked, #1 and #2 didn't. As this appear to be a bug, it may get fixed in a cumulative update and you could switch back to your preferred theme.

 

so i have to loose HC 1 & 2 but still use HC with no frills ?

i just adjusted my HC settings and the security center came up properly. so the next question is once i get security center (defender) set up the way i like, can i revert back to my normal setting and defender will still do it's job? *Think

The security center is not part of Defender doing its job. It is just a User Interface to allow you to control it called MSASCuiL.exe. The real work is done by MsMpEng.exe which you never see (except listed in Task Manager). Your contrast setting should have no effect on it.

There's also the old style UI from before Creators Update, it's still available in Fall Creators Update, but hidden away. That one still works in high contrast (I've just tested it).

Though that too has a bug in Fall Creators Update (but one with a workaround) awaiting a fix in a cumulative update.

so i should be able to set up defender the way i want and then revert back to my normal desktop and all should be good*chuckle

with the normal once a month check up to make sure all is well

updates says it's up to date, that is what started this i was not seeing the updates recorded so i went poking around, they were in reliability but not listed in the updates tab in security.

i have also did the remote assist with MS and they seem to gloss over the info as to the HC settings the went straight for MALWARE BITES to un install it (i can re install no biggy)

While you wait, I've found another workaround that may be more use to you.

The bug only stops it opening. You only have to change to a different high contrast theme to start Defender Security Center, once it has started you can switch back to your preferred desktop and it will continue to work normally while it is open. It's a one-time fix, if you close it you'll have to make the temporary switch to open it again.
