Windows 10: Windows Defender service says it isn't running but says I'm protected and also says this...

I open Microsoft Defender. I'm told everything looks good. I click Alerts and history. Screen say this device isn't fully protected. I click see details and instructed to go to Windows Security and start Defender. I open Windows Security and get that screen, not the Windows Defender screen like displayed the Microsoft Store first screenshot. I have the app, and selecting it says to Get in Store App which opens to a screen that says Open. It opens to the second below which leads me to the Windows Security screen, not the Microsoft Defender screen. Where is the option to start Defender as stat

Windows Defender has a red X and says service has stopped, please help

I am on Windows 8, and control panel security says Windows Defender is my anti virus and firewall.

Windows defender says everything is up to date, real time protection is on, and when I scanned it showed no issues.

 

Epson says Windows Defender is breaking their drivers/apps

I don't twit, so I can't use that vehicle to get attention from those insiders you list.

I did post this to Feedback Hub. FWIW, probably asymptotically approaching zero in my experience.

I've had Windows Defender Real Time Protection turned off, at Epson's suggestion, for almost twenty four hours now. Epson Scan has worked every time I've tested it. This suggests that maybe there is a relationship between Windows Defender and Epson Scan
failing to work as expected. That's not to say that it proves who is causing the problem. But Epson has known about this for a LONG time now--it's a rash over all their product reviews since about the time they came out with a Windows 10 driver--and all they
are willing to do is blame Microsoft and Windows Defender and suggest that users turn Windows Defender off.
