Windows Defender spiking CPU usage while disabled.

Since I was forced to update to 1903 and the subsequent optional update (KB4512941) I have had issues with CPU spikes. I initially thought it was the Cortana issue, but after implementing that fix I still had issues. I checked Task Manager, which took ages to open because of the CPU spikes, and saw that MsMpEng.exe was using up to 50% CPU at times. Which is weird because I have it disabled and run Malwarebytes.

It shows disabled in Virus & Threat Protection, and it is disabled through both the group policy editor and the registry. The only part that is not disabled is the Services, but it doesn't allow me to disable those.

Is there any reason why Windows Defender is still running? It slows down my PC to the level where it takes 2 minutes for a website to even start loading, Task Manager won't even load the processes that are running and Git Extensions stops responding when I try to make any change.

    :)

  2. Explorer constantly spiking CPU usage for Win 10

Hi. Thank you for your answer. I tried all your suggestions, but nothing helped.

Clean bot seems helped at first but no after some hours spikes came back and now spiking more often with every hour of PC working.

Same happened also without clean boot.

Any other suggestions what to try ?

Just to let you know that I worked with Win 7 before with even more programs installed than now and I did not switched off my PC for weeks and CPU usage was lower in general not to talk about any spikes in CPU, newer noticed anything like that...

    Thanks

  3. VERY HIGH CPU USAGE

Hey there Kristian, first I'd suggest using your task manager and seeing if Windows antimalware executable is going on, because it can spike high cpu usage rates. Afterwords, i'd like for you to do a scan with your windows defender, as it may be malware
    infecting your computer.

    Random CPU usage spikes

    Hello,

User profile corruption can cause high CPU usage as it
opens programs that are not necessary on the background
. To troubleshoot the issue, we suggest
creating a new user account on your computer to see if the same issue will occur on a different user profile. To do this, simply follow the steps below:

    • Select the Start button, then select Settings > Accounts > Family
      & other people
      > Add someone else to this PC.

    • Type a user name, password, password hint, and then select Next.

Should you have further questions, please let us know.
