Windows 10: windows defender update fails after 16299.309 update

my system has updated to 16299.309 ok but i keep getting a failed Windows Defender update error
it's says it's downloading, then installing, gets to 100% and then throws error message below:

"Definition Update for Windows Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Definition 1.263.659.0) - Error 0x80070643"

i tried many fixes including the Trouble Shooter, SFC, resetting download history (batch file from Brink) & ended up reinstalling windows 10 (keeping programs, files & settings) but no fix.
if i try to update directly from defender i get "error code - 2147023293 ...Fatal error during installation"

Disk Cleanup of system files is also problematic & doesn't complete on its own.. has to be stopped & restarted numerous times but ultimately seems to delete the required files..

since i reinstalled windows 10.. do you think it's a setting that was retained from previous install that is stopping it from working? i've wasted hours on this and i've hit the wall.

16299.309 entier systems unavailable for 10 min, geforce experiences fails to update, bullguard fails to load its engine and components, only thing that works is windows defender updates and should be off as it is in every settings available but still runs
and hijacks the entire system.

Going to give a 100% thumbs down for the latest and greatest 16299.309 !!!!

So after a few days of constant win10 updates I get this; March 13, 2018—KB4088776 (OS Build 16299.309.

Installs fine but on reboot I get another update for windows defender definitions.

Now the problem, I use another 3rd party antivirus program, it is up to date and does not expire for a year.

I have noticed that the bullguard engine is failing to start on each of the three win10 pro machines in my cluster.

A reboot of the desktop usually fixes the issue with BG but now BG runs fine but defender is also running when it should not.

I have turned off every aspect of defender but update notice on every boot.

So all the fixes for March 13, 2018—KB4088776 (OS Build 16299.309 just add more issues.

I do not have 10 hours a day to devote to fixing the MS mess.

 

- presumably you mean you did an in-place upgrade repair install? (Normal boot, run setup.exe from a mounted Win 10 iso or Win 10 bootable medium).

1. First check your disk:
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and make sure all disks are reported as good.
If not, do not continue, and post a screenshot of its GUI.

2. Now check your file system:

From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

well the problem has fixed itself..
tried manual updates again today and all went fine.. no errors..
hope it stays that way..
