Windows 10: Windows Defender Update in disabled mode when McAfee is installed

We have McAfee as an Enterprise solution for AV and DLP. We understand when McAfee is installed Windows Defender gets disabled automatically. Day in and out our SOC team sends notification to update Windows Defender though its disabled. I tried and tried with many options for the update but its not possible to install Defender updates in disabled mode. Kindly suggest if there is any way to update it either by script or any other way. Thanks DK

Conflict between McAfee and Windows Defender

Did you ask McAfee support (http://service.mcafee.com/) and/or in their forum (McAfee Support – The Page You Are Looking for Has Been Moved)?

Try to

• uninstall McAfee
• run their removal tool (see List of anti-malware product removal tools )
• reboot
• re-install McAfee

In case Windows Defender is still not disabled after doing the above steps, either

disable Windows Defender manually (see the Answer-marked post of GreginMich in

this thread)

or

use a REG file (see Option 2 here: Windows Defender - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 )

 

McAfee and Windows Defender

When a different antimalware protection product is installed, Windows Defender is disabled to make sure the two products do not interfere. In other words, McAfee tells Windows that McAfee is now protecting the system, and Windows therefore turns off Windows
Defender.

There should be an uninstall entry for McAfee if you'd like to remove the trial. Go to Start | Settings | System | Apps & features to find McAfee's entry. Once you click on it, there should be an Uninstall button that'll kick off the uninstall steps.

Windows Defender automatically disabled

Thank you for responding.

I suggest you to place the computer in safe mode and check if the Windows Defender works.

Method 1:

Step 1: Start computer in safe mode.

• 
  Type Settings in the search box on the desktop, select
  Settings.
  
• 
  Here select Change pc settings and then
  General.
  
• 
  Scroll down to Advanced startup, click
  Restart now.
  
• 
  Click on Troubleshoot, Advanced options, and Startup Settings.
  
• 
  Click Restart, select
  Safe mode and then press Enter.
  

Step 2: Try to
run the Windows Defender in safe mode.

Steps:

• Press Windows key and type Windows Defender.
• Right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
• It may prompts you to enter the password.

Method 2: If the issue still persists, place the computer in normal mode and check for the Windows Defender services.

Step 1: Place the computer in normal mode.

• Press Windows + R keys to open
  Run command.
• Type msconfig and press
  Enter.
• In the System Configuration
  window, click on General tab.
• Select Start-up selection as Normal startup, click on Apply and Ok.
• Follow onscreen instructions.

Step 2: Once you are in normal mode, I suggest you to check for the
Windows Defender services.

• Press Windows + R keys to open
  Run command.
• Type services.msc and press
  Enter.
• Search for Windows Defender, right click on it and
  start the service.
• Also, set the Startup type to
  Automatic.
• Do the same for Windows Defender Network Inspection Service.
• Now check if you are able to access Windows Defender.
