Windows 10: Windows Defender update

Having lots of failed updates for WD definitions, I went to control panel and opened WD. It said WD is up to date. I tried the update button anyway and it actually installed the latest definitions.

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.213.5087.0) - Error 0x80070643

Yes I understand that Windows Defender will not run if another AV program is installed (in this case Norton 360) but then why does Windows Update keep trying and failing to install Defender updates, when Windows Defender is not running?

I uninstalled Norton 360, ran Windows Defender and downloaded updates for it. Then ran Windows Update and it worked fine, didn't report any Windows Defender updates. I then reinstalled Norton 360 and Windows Defender correctly is turned off.

But again Windows Update tries to install Windows Defender updates and fails: "Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.213.5520.0) - Error 0x80070643es. This is a Windows Update bug introduced last month, probably in the cumulative
update for January 2016. Is there any way to fix it?

 

PC not updating

Try update windows defender using windows defender and then go to updates. Or disable windows defender and check for updates , then enable windows defender and update again.

 

I've found a bug in Windows 10 & Windows Defender. I open up Windows Defender and update it. I close Windows Defender and open Windows Update to check for updates. It always redownloads updates for Windows Defender definitions again.

 

I am having issues with WD updates as well. I just update the program from the tray and do not use Windows Update. This probably will be fixed with the next build.

I'm personally not expecting it to be fixed anytime soon. Look at the bug for Mail, People & Calendar. It's existed in both build 10041 and 10049. Just like, I'm not expecting the final version of Windows 10 to be released to everyone until the 3rd Thursday of OctoberYou have to figure Windows 10 is being made for everything now. No more separate versions per device, so they say. They released the TP for pcs, laptops, etc. in October, yet Windows Phone user's didn't get a TP version until February. They should've released it for everything at the same time, especially considering phone's can't run desktop app's, like pc's, laptop's and some tablet's can.

 

Been like this since Win 7. Since def updates (security essentials in win 7) aren't really hotfixes or system patches, they don't register in the system as installed updates. So, when you update thru Defender UI, it works fine (faster, even), but "check for updates" will see it again and reload it. No harm done, just inconsistency between WU and Win Defender. Those aren't dups.... they are different revision numbers of definitions. The KB number will stay the same.
