Windows 10: Windows Defender Won't Update - Definition Version Created 31 December 1969?!

Thanks in advance for any assistance with my issue.


My Windows Defender has had that little yellow exclamation mark next to it for about a month now. Every time I click on it, it says that my Virus & Threat Protection needs attention, followed by the message "Protection definitions are out of date"


When I click 'Update' it spends some time searching for update but nothing happens. The yellow exclamation mark remains.


I noticed that in this same screen, it says "Last updated" followed by today's date, which leaves me to believe it is indeed current.


I also noticed that it says "Version created on: 12/31/1969 4:00pm" which seems awfully suspicious to me - my PC time is set correctly.


I have ran a Malwarebytes scan and it revealed nothing. In my Security Providers settings, it says that Antivirus is Windows Defender Antivirus, followed by "You're using other antivirus providers." which is also strange, I deleted Malwarebytes after my scan.


Windows Update seems to be working. Diagnostics feedback was set to "Full". Those are all the clues I can give you.

Task to auto update windows defender definitions disappears

My mom has a new laptop with windows 8.1, we always set the windows updates to manual.
On our other windows 8.1 computers I have created a task for auto updating windows defender definitions, which works fine for us.

This is how I created this task:

"Click on "Create Task", name it what you like (mine is Daily Signature Update), set the trigger as the time you want it to run every day.

For Action browse to Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe and select it. In "Add arguments" add -SignatureUpdate -MMPC"

But somehow this task disappears once it has run on my mom's laptop.
I'm logged in as admin and then I also tried it with running the task scheduler as admin, the task just disappears every day for some reason, while it works fine on our other windows 8.1 computers.

Anyone an idea why this task disappears every time?

Why won't Windows Defender not auto update anymore

I have have windows updates set to notify updates , I will install myself, because I want to make a system restore point before installing updates.

Because of this windows defender does not update automatically and I had to create a task for updating in the task scheduler, which I did but it does not work anymore since I re-installed windows.
What am I doing wrong?

 

Windows 10 Enterprise - Windows Defender tells me it is off and out of date when it is on and definitions are current

My company recently scrapped Symantec AV and decided to go with Windows Defender.

When I boot up my machine - I get a red notification that Defender is not on - and to click to fix.

When I click it brings me to the Defender page - with a green icon - all is good.

About 20 minutes after booting up, I notice the Windows Defender icon in the systray with the yellow mark next to it. It says my virus definitions are out of date.

When I go to the Protection Updates screen to look at the details, I am puzzled. It shows the following:

Threat Definition Version: 1.269.52.0

Version Created On: 4:00:00 PM Wednesday, December 31, 1969

Last Update: 9:32 AM Thursday, May 24, 2018

Note that the Version Created On is the Unix EPOCH date (Jan 1 1970 00:00:00 UTC) minus the time zone I'm in.

I've checked a few other systems that aren't having an issue and the only difference I can see is the "Version Created On:" date is current.

I've done all the usual SFC and DISM troubleshooting. I've also reinstalled the definitions file manually.

Can anyone help me to update this date - or at least figure out why the system is not pulling the correct version date?

I contacted Microsoft Support online and they were unable to help me. Their solution is to wipe and reinstall everything.
