    Windows Defender writing 100% disk usage on SSD. Why?


    Why would windows defender be writing gigabytes of data to my drive during a full scan, writing to the disk at 100% (over 100 mbps)?

    Windows defender gets stuck for a long time at a few consecutive files while doing a full scan. When I opened up task manager, for most of the scan my CPU usage is high but disk usage is low. During the files where it slows down, I noticed my disk goes up to 100% active with write speeds >100mbps, and read speeds near 0.

    I ran defender individually on all of the sub-folders on the drive, and it never got stuck or went to high disk usage. However, Defender didn't give me the option of scanning a few folders that show on TreeSize: PerfLogs, Recover, System Volume Information, and C:*.* (contains hiberfil.sys, pagefile.sys, swapfile.sys, and $winre_backup_partition.marker). Also, during the period where defender gets stuck, the free space available on the drive decreases by more than 20gb, though I can never see which folders are increasing in size.

    I've run windows update and I know I have the most recent updates on windows defender.

    100% Disk usage ongoing

    Everytime I turn on my computer disk usage goes to 100% for a few minutes, sometimes a long while. Windows Defender finds no virus, all definitions are current, and there is no history of potentially harmful items detected. 100% disk usage problem began
    about a month or two ago. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

    Okay, so

    Lately I've had crazy boot and load times, and what appeared to be disk issues (usage was 100%, read/write was little-to-none). Disabled a few things in services.msc (superfetch and windows search), which fixed the 100% constant usage.

    But boot and load are unaffected. and i've also found that in games(Ark) and stress tests (prime95 blend), i can't get ram usage over 5.6/8.

    I'm not sure if the problems are related. This is my first foray into 10forums, and my tech knowledge is limited.

    any thoughts or suggestions? will provide details as needed

    100% disk usage

    The most common cause of 100% disk usage appears to be Superfetch and Prefetch, but there are also other causes. You can try disabling both these features and see if it helps.
