Windows 10: Windows Defender

Every time I try to use my computer to get work done, I have difficulty to make progress because antivirus application (Windows Defender) is running. I have to wait approximately 1.5 hours to be able to use my computer daily. I get the report that my computer had 6 or more scans to run. I figured it was running a lot because I was not able to use it. I end up unplugging my modem, rebooting, try to change the priority of the service, try to end the service, try to end the task, try to change the name of the file so it would not run at all, try to change the configuration settings, etc. and nothing works. Either I, as the administer, can't have control of my system because I don't have permissions or the file has permissions set up where I can't delete it. It is very frustrating to know that every day I try to use my computer to get work completed, I have to wait for over an hour to use it because the an antivirus application is running and continues to run not matter what I try.


Microsoft, would you please add a feature to the application so that I can control when my scans occur like you do with system updates? Or, at least allow me to change the priority or temporarily suspend the task? My system is dual boot with Windows 10 and Ubuntu. This is getting so annoying that I am finding using Ubuntu is becoming more desirable. Not a preference but being force to examine the use of a different OS because of the performance of the Defender application.

Windows Defender problem

Hi Ernst,

To troubleshoot this issue, we suggest that you check the Windows Defender service if it's running. If you are using a third party spyware/malware program, it may disable the Windows Defender service. To do this, please follow the steps below:

• Press Windows + R key.
• Type services.msc.
• Right-click Windows Defender service and click
  Start.

Windows update and windows defender issues

We suggest you to avoid installing any cleaner or anti-virus software that may interrupt the function of Windows Defender. Make sure that Windows Defender is always on. To do this follow these steps:

• On the Start menu, type Windows Defender and hit enter.
  
• Click Settings.
  
• Turn Real-time protection on.

We also recommend you to install the latest update for Windows Defender.
