    Windows Defender

I'm having problems with this, too. Or rather I'm worried I may not be protected. I downloaded Windows 10 yesterday. When I go into programs, I don't see Windows Defender in there. Why not? Shouldn't it be there?

I've been reading on the net about Defender. Articles say to get rid of any other virus protection software that's been downloaded. When I was Windows 7, I downloaded the FREE trial of Malwarebytes and the PC came with a FREE trial to McAfee. (I recently bought a refurbished Acer from Walmart). But now I'm afraid to uninstall these two programs because I fear I may end up with no protection.

Once again: shouldn't the Windows Defender that came with the Windows 10 download show up in "Programs"?

I am paying close attention to the post about this subject and will try whatever helps. But in the meantime, I would like to find Defender on my PC. I apologize for the redundant dialogue.

    Thanks so much to everybody.

    Carol

    :)

    Windows Defender

Malwarebytes can run along side the most AV programs including Windows Defender.

If you uninstall McAfee properly, you should be able to enable Windows Defender.

Oh, my, Lord. This is a lot for me to digest. <G>

ONE BIG QUESTION. WHY DOESN'T WINDOWS DEFENDER SHOW UP IN PROGRAMS? IF IT WAS DOWNLOADED, IT SHOULD SHOW UP IN PROGRAMS, RIGHT?

Is it possible I accidently deleted it when I was uninstalling Defender Driver? I honestly don't believe I did delete Windows Defender. I was cautious when I was removing WinZip Driver & Defender Driver.

Would MCAfee prevent Windows Driver from showing up in Programs?

Thank you for bearing with me.

I'm sorry. I don't mean to come across as a complete idiot, but how do I use that link to restore Windows Defender? What I mean is how do I manipulate the exe dll?

    Windows Defender

OK simplified that translates as C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MASSCui.exe

Typing %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe in the search will find it or use explorer as above, right click on MASSCui.exe and either pin to start, pin to taskbar or send to desktop as shortcut. 3 options.

Windows Defender does not occur in the program list, because it is a feature of windows.
I have never seen a feature of windows in the program list.

You can't remove Windows Defender, only disable it.

When you have another AntiVirus program installed, Windows Defender disables itself to prevent problems due to multiple active AV programs. But still, the answer will be

Defender won't normally show up unless you are in it's opinion overdue a scan in which case the notifications thingy will tell you.

So long as it's showing as enabled in the Update and Security settings it will be or should be working and you can run it from the entry at the bottom of the settings, however pinning it to the start menu or putting a shortcut on the desktop is quicker, as in a one step process to open it without having to go through settings.

I tried it several times but finally entered the search this way: %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender. This brought it up and then I right clicked on MASSCui. Thank you so much for your brilliant help. You computer techies are in a class all your own, and I'm glad you are. Have a super day.

In explorer, you can only enter a folder in the address balk.
So, %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe won't work, because then you would request explorer to open it but it can't via the address balk.

    Windows Defender

This is really good to hear and makes me feel safer. Whoosh! I'm brand new at learning Windows 10 and sometimes I feel like I'm walking up a cliff on stilts. I need to force feed myself to "read directions". I'm so lousy at that. I'm rattling because I'm happy. <BG> *Party

If you are capable of removing windows defender, then the Operating System would probably crash.
Windows is built to function with windows defender, this means that when you remove something from its antivirus, the catch net will be there when windows finds out it can't load the removed file.
Then I would suggest you to reinstall windows, or an inplace upgrade (repair) if you're lucky enough to boot into windows.

The catch net is the bluescreen (when windows crashes), I don't know if you're aware of this but it looks like
