Windows 10: Windows Defender

Hi!
I currently use Norton 360 for virus control. To renew, Norton is asking 100+ bucks, I can not nor will pay that amount. Is Defender enough to control malware on my laptop? Norton does ok, but I do not want to pay 100 bucks to renew

Hi and welcome to the forums. I would suggest that using defender and Malwarebytes are a good combination to keep you safe, There is a free version of Malwarebytes.

I apologize for the intrusion, as I see that this thread is marked "Solved".

A wee clarification:
MBAM Free is only a manual, on-demand scanner. It can only detect/REMOVE malware that got past one's other defenses onto the system. It does not provide real-time protection.
For real-time, real-time, complementary protection to help PREVENT infection, alongside your AV (WD or other), you need the paid, Premium version. It targets certain types of non-viral malware (especially zero-hour and zero-day threats) that are often missed by the AVs. It will run just fine alongside WD.

For another layer of protection, you might wish to consider anti-exploit applications, such as Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit (Free & paid Premium versions both shield in real time), or HitmanPro Alert.

I use Windows Defender and yesterday I was AFK making lunch when I returned I saw Defender was scanning and stopped scanning as soon as I moved my cursor, I did not know Defender did this but I think its cool it does *Smile

 

ye thumbs up for defender here too, 2 years now and nothing else. 0 viruses/malware

Yes it scans when it detects system is idle. Defender has gone a long way since the MSE days. It's now quite good no matter what some people may say.

 

One nice feature if it's true is the claimed ability to run beside other anti virus/malware packages without problems..

Most of the other, 3rd-party AVs will automatically disable the real-time protection of WD on Win10.
They may still allow the new, "background" scanning feature.
But it's important never to run more than one, real-time anti-virus on any system, regardless of WD.
Doing so is a set-up for conflicts, clashes, slowdowns and reduced security, not enhanced security.
So, AFAIK, some or all of the major AVs will put up with at least the background scanning feature of WD. But there could be problems with both WD and the other AV were running in real time.

Along those same lines, yes, WD will run alongside a real-time anti-malware (AM) application, such as MBAM Premium.
That is by design, so to speak, to provide complementary, layered protection against different types of threats.
WD is an AV. MBAM Premium is an AM. They provide different types of protection.

I'm running Kaspersky on a MAC, and plan to use it on new WIn 10 notebook in a week or so too.

Think you couldn't be much more specific in your reply MM, it's good to know that. Hopefully the various security systems have the matter in hand.

The problem with this stuff for me is that the principle is clear, but I wish I knew enough about the mechanics of the software to properly understand it. Oh well!
